MINNEAPOLIS – The Minnesota men's golf team recorded its lowest round of the weekend Sunday to move up one spot and finish in ninth place at the 2021 Big Ten Men's Golf Championship at Crooked Stick Golf Club in Carmel, Ind.
The ninth-place finish equals the team's result from 2019, which was its best since 2015. After a 314 in the first round and a 306 Saturday, Minnesota shot a 6-over-par 294 Sunday as each golfer posted their lowest round of the tournament. That left the team +50 for the tournament with a 914. Illinois claimed the team crown for the sixth year in a row with a 19-over 883, while Iowa was one stroke back and third-place Northwestern was 13 shots back of the Hawkeyes.
Individual medalist honors went to Iowa's Mac McClear, who was the only golfer in the field to finish the weekend under par. He shot a 1-under 215, while three golfers tied for second at 2-over.
Minnesota's top finisher for the second straight championship was Angus Flanagan. The senior, who was looking to defend his 2019 medalist title, ended in a three-way tie for 13th with a +9, 225. Flanagan began the day strong with two birdies in his first four holes, but ended making the turn at even-par. On his second nine, he posted bogeys on No. 1 and No. 6, but finished the tournament with a birdie on No. 9 to end with a 1-over 73. His three birdies tied for the most by a Gopher in any round this weekend.
Sophomore Connor Glynn matched Flanagan with Minnesota's lowest round of the Championships with a 1-over 73, as well. With no tournament in 2020 due to COVID-19, Glynn tied for 20th with an 11-over 227 (77-77-73) in his Big Tens debut. He opened his final round with bogeys on three of his first five holes, but he steadied himself with five straight pars. He then posted birdies on No. 2 and No. 5 before ending his round with four pars in a row.
A pair of Gophers tied for 37th as fifth-year senior Thomas Longbella and freshman Ben Warian each shot 54-hole totals of 232, 16 strokes over par.
Longbella made the biggest jump from round two to three of any Gopher, gaining 12 spots on the leaderboard thanks to a 2-over 74 Sunday. His 37th-place finish was the second best of his career in three trips to the Big Ten Championships, bettering a tie for 48th as a junior and trailing a tie for 29th as a freshman. Both of his birdies in Sunday's round came during his first nine as he alternated bogeys and birdies between holes 14-17. He was then 2-over on his second nine.
Warian shot a 3-over 75 Sunday to wrap up his Big Ten Championships debut. He birdied his opening hole at the 10th but posted a pair of bogeys before a second birdie at No. 18 left him even-par as he made the turn. Three bogeys in a four-hole span during his second nine gave him his final total.
After not competing in the first two rounds, sophomore Harrison Arnold moved into the lineup Sunday as a substitute for junior Lincoln Johnson (82-80). Arnold responded by recording a 2-over 74 in his first career round of competition at the Big Tens. He was 2-over through his first 10 holes, but was even-par the rest of the way. He birdied No. 2 and bogeyed No. 3, but came back with a second birdie on No. 5. He recorded pars the rest of the way, minus a bogey on No. 8.
Minnesota now waits to learn its postseason fate. The NCAA Men's Golf Selection Show is scheduled to air Wednesday, May 5 at 1 p.m. CT on GOLF Channel.
