McHugh Makes Finals, Sets Program Record on Day One of Wave II
6/13/2021 9:48:00 PM | Men's Swimming & Diving, Women's Swimming & Diving
MINNEAPOLIS - Junior diver Jake Butler and senior breaststroker Max McHugh made headlines on Sunday night at their respective Olympic Trials events, with Butler competing in the three-meter finals session and McHugh qualifying for Monday night's 100m breaststroke final.
Of the two, McHugh was the first to compete Sunday, and he wasted no time in making history. Right out of the gates in his preliminary session, McHugh managed to set a new Minnesota program record in a time of 59.93 by touching second in the seventh heat of the event. He ultimately finished the prelims fourth overall, 13 spots higher than his original seed time.
The night's semifinal/finals session held in store the semifinal round of the same event, and a chance for McHugh to once again show off his blazing speed. The Sturgeon Bay, Wis. native did just that for the second time of the day Sunday night, beating his preliminary showing to reset the program record at 59.68, secure himself a spot in Monday night's final and take his shot at making Tokyo later this summer.
A little over 600 miles east, Butler was taking his own shot at making Team USA as he competed in the men's individual three-meter final. Through the competition, the Seal Beach, Calif. product threw a solid slate of dives, with his best registering at 67.50 and no dive scoring below a 52.50. Butler ultimately finished 10th overall (1075.05) in his first ever Olympic Trial.
Sunday's action marked the end of the 2021 diving trials.
Two other Gophers made an appearance on the Olympic Trials stage Sunday as well, as alumna Tevyn Waddell and sophomore Sawyer Grimes swam in the morning session of the swimming trials. Waddell registered a 53rd place finish in the women's 100m butterfly in a time of 1:01.50, while Grimes touched 40th overall in the men's 400m freestyle (3:59.18).
Waddell's next event comes Monday morning when she gears up for the women's 100m backstroke, while Grimes will have to wait until Wednesday's prelim session to compete in his next event, the men's 800 freestyle.
Action at Wave II will resume Monday morning at 10 a.m. CT. The prelims will be live streamed (see link above) and then aired on a delayed broadcast again at 5:30 p.m. CT on NBCSN.
