McHugh Performs in Gophers Fourth Finals Appearance of 2021 Trials

MINNEAPOLIS - Senior breaststroke specialist and Minnesota team captain Max McHugh impressed on the national stage once again Monday night, touching the wall tied for seventh in the 100m breast final (1:00.56) at Wave II of the 2021 Olympic Swimming Team Trials.

The two-time 2021 NCAA Champion left nothing in the water in his Olympic Trials final debut as he flew off the blocks, reaching the 50m wall third overall before ultimately dropping to his final placement on the back half of the race. The event was only McHugh's first of the trials, with him set to take on the 200m breast later in the week.

McHugh's final time of 1:00.56 would have registered as a new Gophers program record, had he not beaten that time twice during each of the preliminary (59.93) and semifinal (59.68) rounds a day earlier. The latter of the two now stands as the LCM record for Minnesota, and Monday's performance puts himself into the top-three swims all time in the event. The record had previously stood for nearly 14 years, since two-time All-American Jon Roberts set it at 1:00.82.

In other action for the Gophers at the trials, alumnae Tevyn Waddell and Lindsey Kozelsky and senior distance star Abbey Kilgallon all took on the morning's prelim session in events of their own.

Of the three, the best finish of the day belonged to Mitchell, S.D. native Waddell, whose sole event of the day was the women's 100 back. Waddell finished the event 21st overall, touching in a time of 1:01.19. Having also competed in the 100 butterfly Sunday, Waddell's final event of the trials will be the 200 back on Friday.

Kilgallon made her debut at the trials in the women's 400m freestyle by touching 46th overall in a time of 4:23.32. Her next and best event will come Tuesday morning, being the 1500m free.

Kozelsky's first taste of action at the 2021 trials came in the women's 100m breast, where the Albert Lea, Minn. product touched 33rd overall in a time of 1:09.94. She will next see competitive waters in Thursday morning's prelim session, when she takes on the 200 breast.
