1/14/2022 9:37:00 AM | Men's Swimming & Diving, Women's Swimming & Diving
MINNEAPOLIS – Competing for the first time in over a month, the Minnesota men's and No. 20 women's swimming and diving teams return to the pool Saturday in Madison, Wis., with a Big Ten tri-dual against Wisconsin and Michigan.
The matchup with the Badgers and Wolverines is set for 10:30 a.m. CT at the Soderholm Family Aquatic Center. Streaming coverage will be provided on BTN+, while live results will also be available on SwimCloud.com and the Meet Mobile app (subscription required).
The Gophers men's and women's teams each have just one loss in their dual meets so far this year, with the men at 2-1 and the women 3-1. Both topped St. Thomas, while the men have also defeated Purdue, and the women have additional victories over Iowa and Nebraska. The Gopher men and women both lost to Wisconsin in their most recent dual meet on Nov. 5.
After having last Sunday's dual meet at UC San Diego canceled due to COVID, Minnesota will be competing for the first time since early December at the Minnesota Invite. Over that four-day event, the Golden Gophers posted three NCAA 'A' cuts, 37 'B' cuts and recorded 70 personal records.
The standout performances of the event belonged to senior Max McHugh and sophomore Megan Van Berkom.
McHugh qualified for the NCAA Championships in two events at the Invite. He guaranteed himself a chance to repeat as national champion in the 100 breast with two 'A' cuts Friday. After an 'A' cut time of 51.18 in the prelims, he followed that in the championship heat with a mark of 51.07, the second fastest time in the country this year.
The next day saw McHugh post an automatic qualifying mark in the 200 breast, where he is also the defending national champion. He touched the wall in 1:51.27, currently the fourth fastest time in the country this year.
Van Berkom set a pair of school records at the Invite. On day two, she broke an eight-year old school mark in the 200 IM with her time of 1:56. The next day, she finished second in the championship heat of the 400 IM at 4:06.92, making her the third fastest swimmer in the event in program history. On the final day of competition, Van Berkom swam the 200 fly in a school record 1:54.15.
In addition to McHugh posting top times in the 100 and 200 breast, three other men's swimmers have led the Gophers in multiple events this year.
Freshman Bar Soloveychik has the fastest marks on the team in the 200 free, 500 free and 1650 free, while sophomore William Christenson has the top times in the 200 fly and 400 IM, and redshirt sophomore Lucas Farrar lays claim to the 50 and 100 free events.
Men's diving has been dominated by Jake Butler, who has claimed first or second place on the 1- and 3-meter boards in all four competitions this year. He was named Big Ten Diver of the Week after his performance at Purdue.
On the women's side, Van Berkom (200 fly, 200 IM, 400 IM) is one of three Gophers to have the top time in three events. Joining her are freshman Hannah Cornish and senior Abbey Kilgallon, who hold the top marks in all the freestyle events. Cornish has posted the top times in the 50, 100 and 200, while Kilgallon has done the same in the 500, 1000 and 1650.
Also leading in multiple events is fifth-year senior Emily Cook, who has the fastest marks in the 100 and 200 back.
Sixth-year senior Sarah Bacon has won both diving events she's competed in so far this year, winning on the 1- and 3-meters in the Wisconsin dual and claiming first in both the prelims and finals of the Minnesota Invite.
The Wisconsin women's team, ranked No. 14 in the latest CSCAA poll, is 3-0 in dual meets this year, while the men's team, which is receiving votes, is also 3-0.
The third-ranked Michigan women and seventh-ranked Michigan men both sport 4-0 records this year in dual meets.
