MINNEAPOLIS – Competing for the first time since early December, the Minnesota men's and women's programs returned to the pool Saturday morning with a tri-dual against Wisconsin and Michigan in Madison.

The #20 Minnesota women fell to the third-ranked Wolverines, 179-121, and to the 14th-ranked Badgers, 170-13. On the men's side, the Golden Gophers were topped by No. 7 Michigan, 188.5-100.5, and to host-Wisconsin, 148-143.

The Golden Gophers won five events, recorded three NCAA 'B' cuts, set three personal bests and tallied 18 season-best performances on the day.

"Our teams both fought from start to finish today," head coach Kelly Kremer said. "We didn't get the positive end of a lot of touches today, but that's something we can learn from moving into championship season. Everyone and every performance matters.

"I've got to tip my hat to Chris Morris. It was an outstanding effort for the first year swimmer to close out our relay win versus Wisconsin in the men's 400 free relay."

The men were paced by senior Max McHugh, who swept the 100 and 200 breaststroke events and helped the 200 medley relay to a first-place finish.

McHugh won the 100 breast for the third time this year with a time of 52.28, good for an NCAA 'B' cut and nearly two seconds faster than any other swimmer. Later in the 200, he won by an even larger margin with his finishing time of 1:56.23, over five seconds faster than the competition.

Sophomore Casey Stowe led off the 200 medley relay before giving way to McHugh, sophomore Kaiser Neverman and redshirt sophomore Lucas Farrar. The winning time of 1:27.35 was the third fastest for the Gophers in the event this year.

The women got individual victories from freshman Hannah Cornish and senior Joy Zhu.

Cornish won the 100 free for the third time this year, touching the wall in 50.21, while Zhu claimed top honors on the 1-meter board with a score of 298.65.

Sophomore Megan Van Berkom scored a second-place finish in the 200 fly, notching a 'B' cut with her time of 1:56.89.

Junior Rachel Butler, sophomore Paula Rodriguez Rivero and freshman Chris Morris all established personal bests on the day.

Butler set hers in the 100 breast, posting a time of 1:05.28 in her first time swimming the event this year. Rodriguez Rivero's came in the 200 back with her time of 2:00.66, while Morris accomplished the feat in the 100 free with by touching in 45.17.

Minnesota is back in action Jan. 28-29 when the men host Northwestern and Purdue and the women face Northwestern and Iowa at Jean K. Freeman Aquatic Center.
