Gophers Return Home for Big Ten Tri-Dual

MINNEAPOLIS – The Minnesota men's and No. 21 women's swimming and diving teams return to Jean K. Freeman Aquatic Center this weekend for a two-day, Big Ten tri-dual.
In addition to each facing Northwestern, the Gopher men will take on Purdue, while the women will also face off with Iowa.
Fans planning on attending should be aware of the University of Minnesota's temporary vaccination policy. Spectators will need to show proof of COVID-19 vaccination or proof of a negative, third-party COVID-19 test within 72 hours of the event.
Friday's schedule begins with diving at 4 p.m. and swimming at 5 p.m. The event schedule for the opening day consists of 1-meter and 3-meter diving, the 200 medley relay, 1000 free, 200 free, 100 back, 100 breast, 200 fly, 50 free, 200 IM and 800 free relay.
Saturday's action begins at 11 a.m. with the 200 free relay, 400 IM, 100 free, 200 back, 100 fly, 500 free, 200 breast and 400 free relay. Platform diving will also start at 11 a.m. in a non-scoring, exhibition format.
Streaming coverage will be provided on BTN+ (subscription required), while live results will also be available on GopherSports.com and the Meet Mobile app (subscription required).
The Minnesota women enter the meet 3-3 in duals this year, including a 156-104 victory over Iowa to open the season. The Gopher men are 2-3 in dual meets, with one of the wins coming against the Boilermakers in West Lafayette in their season opener.
Both the men and women are coming off tri-dual losses to Wisconsin and Michigan last weekend in Madison, Wis.
The women's season has been highlighted by the performance of sophomore Megan Van Berkom.
She set a pair of school records at the Minnesota Invite, breaking an eight-year old school mark in the 200 IM with her time of 1:56.48 and swimming the 200 fly in a school record 1:54.15. In addition to those events, Van Berkom also has the fastest time this season in the 400 IM.
Van Berkom (200 fly, 200 IM, 400 IM) is one of three Gophers to have the top time in three events. Joining her are freshman Hannah Cornish and senior Abbey Kilgallon, who hold the top marks in all the freestyle events. Cornish has posted the top times in the 50, 100 and 200, while Kilgallon has done the same in the 500, 1000 and 1650.
Also leading in multiple events is fifth-year senior Emily Cook, who has the fastest marks in the 100 and 200 back.
Sixth-year senior Sarah Bacon has won both diving events she's competed in so far this year, winning on the 1- and 3-meters in the Wisconsin dual and claiming first in both the prelims and finals of the Minnesota Invite.
Senior Max McHugh has been the men's top performer, already qualifying for the NCAA Championships in two events. He guaranteed himself a chance to repeat as national champion in both the 100 breast and 200 breast after posting 'A' cuts at December's Minnesota Invite.
In addition to McHugh posting top times in the 100 and 200 breast, three other men's swimmers have led the Gophers in multiple events this year.
Freshman Bar Soloveychik has the fastest marks on the team in the 200 free, 500 free and 1650 free, while sophomore Kaiser Neverman has the top times in the 100 and 200 fly and 200 IM.
Redshirt sophomore Lucas Farrar lays claim to the 50 and 100 free events, while men's diving has been dominated by junior Jake Butler, who has claimed first or second place on the 1- and 3-meter boards in all but one competition this year.
