Gophers Start Strong on Day One of Tri-Dual

MINNEAPOLIS ā The No. 21 Minnesota women's swimming and diving teamĀ leads in both matchups, while the men are split after day one of the tri-dual at Jean K. Freeman Aquatic Center Friday.
The Golden Gopher women lead No. 17 Northwestern, 104-101, and hold a 173-24 advantage over Iowa. Meanwhile, the Minnesota men are up 105-100 over Purdue, and trail Northwestern, 111-94.
Friday's action saw the Gophers record one NCAA 'A' cut, as well as 13 'B' cuts, nine race victories and 11 personal bests.
The highlight of the evening belonged to Minnesota senior Max McHugh in the 100 breast. The defending NCAA champion in the event, McHugh finished first with a time of 50.58, the fastest in the country so far this season and an automatic qualifying mark for the NCAAs.
He owned the second fastest time in the country entering competition Friday with a 51.07 set at the Minnesota Invite in early December, trailing only Texas' Caspar Corbeau who had a 50.79 at the Invite himself.
McHugh was also part of the night's opening win for Minnesota, the men's 200 medley relay. Joined by sophomores Casey Stowe, Kaiser Neverman and Lucas Farrar, the Gopher squad finished at 1:24.98.
It was the first of two relay wins on the night for the men, also winning the 800 free relay in the night's final event. In that race, freshmen Chris Morris, Bar Soloveychik, senior Cameron Kelley and sophomore James Freeman combined for a winning mark of 6:29.11
McHugh was one of four Gophers to record multiple victories Friday night.
In addition to being part of the 800 free relay, Soloveychik also touched first in the 200 free with a 'B' cut of 1:36.18.
On the women's side, sophomore Megan Van Berkom captured first in a pair of individual races. First, she won the 200 fly in a 'B' cut time of 1:54.72. Then she took first-place honors in the 200 IM in another 'B' cut of 1:57.13.
In diving, sixth-year senior Sarah Bacon swept the 1- and 3-meter boards. She claimed the 1-meter with a score of 327.15, while the 3-meter was won with a score of 348.45.
The final victory of the evening belonged to freshman Hannah Cornish, who set a personal record in the 200 free with a 'B' cut time of 1:46.09.
Cornish also had a 'B' cut in the 50 free (22.43), as did senior Olivia Bloomer (22.38) and junior Maggie Summit (22.61).
Minnesota also saw multiple 'B' cuts set in the 100 back with senior Emily Cook (53.47) and sophomore Paula Rodriguez Rivero (53.65) and in the 100 breast thanks to juniors Grace Bennin (1:01.66) and Emma Lezer (1:01.72).
The Gopher men also saw 'B' times posted by Farrar in the 50 free (19.76) and Neverman in the 200 fly (1:45.17).
