Last Time Out: SDSU Holiday Invite/Wooo Pig Classic
The Golden Gophers combined for six event titles as the University of Minnesota track & field team opened the 2021-22 indoor season at the SDSU Holiday Open and the Wooo Pig Classic. The highlight of the day came from Allison Gerads who posted her third career 4,000+ point pentathlon performance at the SDSU Holiday Open. Out of the four Gophers who competed at the Wooo Pig Classic it was Abby Kohut-Jackson who posted a 10-second personal best in the 3000m, taking fourth in a time of 9:10:04, a time that would qualify her at last year's NCAA Indoor Championships.
2020 Minnesota Open Rewind
The Gophers combined for 20 event titles at the 2020 Minnesota Open, including four meet records. Both the men and the women won 10 event titles in 2020 led by Amira Young and Val Larson, who won individual events and ran on Minnesota's winning 4x400m relay team. On the men's side Kaleb Siekmeier is a notable returner from that meet in the weight throw, Siekmeier finished as the runner-up in 2020 with a toss of 20.61m (67-7).
2020-21 Indoor Track & Field Season Rewind
The Gophers wrapped up the 2020-21 indoor track & field season with 12 different All-America honors with 10 different student-athletes earning either first or second team distinctions. Minnesota's top returning performer is Bethany Hasz who was the NCAA indoor runner-up in the 5000m. The women's program finished the meet in 24th as a team. Returning 2020-21 All-Americans for the Gophers are Amira Young, Allison Gerads, Tess Keyzers, Jayla Campbell, Abigail Schaaffe, Val Larson and Janielle Josephs. On top of the national success, the Gophers also are the reigning Big Ten indoor women's team champions. The women's team returns 11 women's student-athletes that won Big Ten indoor titles last season.
A Historic 2021 Cross Country Season Recap
Led by now two-time USTFCCCA Midwest Region Women's Coach of the Year, Sarah Hopkins and the Gopher Cross Country program reached new heights this past cross country season. Hopkins led the Gophers' women's team to their second-best NCAA Championship finish in program history, coming in seventh overall in Tallahassee, Fla., behind three All-American performances from Bethany Hasz (seventh), Megan Hasz (23rd) and Abby Kohut-Jackson (39th). Hopkins led the Gophers to a number of top finishes during the 2021 season leading into the national championships, including winning team titles at all of the NCAA Midwest Regional Championships, Big Ten Conference Championships and Roy Griak Invitational. Under Hopkins guidance, the Gophers have also seen a pair of individual Big Ten Championships over the past two seasons, with B. Hasz taking the title in 2020-21 and M. Hasz doing the same at the 2021 Big Ten Championships.
