‘U’ Sweeps Spartans with 6-3 Thriller

The Gophers posted a season-high 60 shots on goal in the win.
EAST LANSING, Mich. – Twelve Minnesota skaters recorded points and the 'U' posted a season-high 60 shots on goal as the No. 9/11 Gopher men's hockey team earned a weekend sweep with Saturday's 6-3 win over Michigan State.
Ben Meyers led the way with two goals while Matthew Knies and Bryce Brodzinski each added a pair of assists. Jack Perbix picked up a goal and an assist for the Maroon & Gold.
Despite falling behind by two goals early, Minnesota (12-8-0 overall, 8-4-0-0-1-0 Big Ten) dominated the pace of play for most of the series finale – outshooting Michigan State 60-24 on the night and 45-14 over the final 40 minutes.
Chaz Lucius brought the Gophers within a goal at the end of the first period and Meyers and Aaron Huglen scored in the second to send the game to the third period in a 3-3 tie. The Gophers completed the rally and scored five-straight goals to end the game with third period goals from Blake McLaughlin, Perbix and Meyers.
Jack LaFontaine earned the win with 21 saves to improve to 12-8-0 on the year.
Noteworthy
Winning its fourth game in seven days (including a pair of exhibition games), Minnesota retains the Mariucci-Bessone Trophy by securing at least a tie in the regular-season series with Michigan State…Meyers recorded nine points (seven goals, two assists) in the week including the exhibition games – the junior captain ended this weekend's series with five points (four goals, one assist)…Meyers and Huglen scored 38 seconds apart at the end of the second period while McLaughlin tallied 22 seconds into the third period.
Coach's Comments
"We were playing very well over the last two periods, and we had an enormous amount of chances," Minnesota head coach Bob Motzko said. "We had contributions from all of our lineup…(we) couldn't be happier."
Next Up: Alaska Comes to Town
Originally scheduled for the season-opening series, Minnesota will host Alaska next weekend to close out the nonconference schedule. The series opens on Friday, Jan. 14 at 6:00 p.m. CT (TV: Bally Sports North PLUS; Stream: B1G+/FOX Sports Go; Radio: 1130 KTLK/103.5 FM) with the finale scheduled for Saturday, Jan. 15 at 6:00 p.m. CT (TV: Bally Sports North; Stream: B1G+/FOX Sports Go; Radio: 1130 KTLK/103.5 FM).
