The loss breaks a 10-game winning streak versus OSU
MINNEAPOLIS -- The No. 10 University of Minnesota volleyball team fell to the No. 6 Ohio State Buckeyes in three sets, 20-25, 21-25, 22-25 on Wednesday night at Maturi Pavilion.
The loss was Minnesota's first to Ohio State since 2014, breaking a 10-game winning streak against the Buckeyes.
Taylor Landfair and Mckenna Wucherer had 10 kills each to lead the Gophers. Melani Shaffmaster went for 34 assists and 10 digs while Jenna Wenaas totaled six kills and nine digs.
As a team, Minnesota (9-6, 4-3 Big Ten) hit .097 with 39 kills, 10 team blocks, 36 digs and two aces. Ohio State (10-5, 5-2 Big Ten) hit .284 with 43 kills, 10 team blocks, 38 digs and one ace.
Emily Londot led Ohio State with 13 kills.
Set Breakdown:
Set 1: Ohio State scored the first four points of the match to jump out to a fast start before the Gophers scored five of the next seven to make it a one-point game at 6-5. A 5-2 OSU run gave the Buckeyes another four-point lead at 11-7. Five different Gophers had kills in the early onset. OSU kept a steady two to four point lead for most of the middle of the set. Minnesota cut it to one at 14-13 after the third kill of the match from Taylor Landfair. OSU scored the next on Emily Londot's fifth kill of the set to go up 15-13 heading into the television timeout. The Gophers would cut it to one at 17-16 after an ace from CC McGraw and 18-17 after another Landfair kill but couldn't tie it up. OSU scored the next two to go up 20-17 and force a timeout from Minnesota. The Gophers would cut it to two before OSU went up 23-19, forcing another timeout from coach McCutcheon. The Buckeyes would go on to take set one, 25-20. OSU hit a blistering .433 compared to .139 for the 'U'. Landfair and Jenna Wenaas tallied four kills apiece to lead Minnesota.
Set 2: The Gophers came out firing with three straight points, getting kills from Mckenna Wucherer and Carter Booth. OSU would battle back immediately, scoring five of the next six to take a 5-4 lead. Minnesota would tie it up at five before a 3-1 OSU spurt put the visitors back up two. A block assist from Melani Shaffmaster and Naya Gros and a pair of kills from Booth helped the Gophers gain back the lead at 11-10 for the first time since it was 4-3. A 5-1 Buckeyes run after that put OSU up 15-12 heading into the media timeout. OSU kept its momentum after the break, registering four of the next six points to go up 19-14, forcing Minnesota's first timeout of the set. The Buckeyes would go up by as many as six points at 22-16 and Minnesota would get no closer than three the rest of the set. OSU took set two, 25-21. OSU hit .382 in set two compared to just .105 for the Gophers. Landfair and Booth led the team with four kills each while OSU's Emily Londot had six. She held a match-high 12 kills after two sets.

The Buckeyes would score two of the next three to go up 10-3 before Minnesota found life, going on a 4-0 run to cut it to 10-7. A solo block from Gros and a kill from Wucherer helped lead the charge. OSU responded after the timeout by scoring seven of the next 10 to go up 17-10, leading to a Minnesota timeout. The Gophers would cut it to four at 18-14 after Landfair's next kill of the night, but four straight from OSU put them back up eight at 22-14. The Gophers weren't done yet, however, as the home team scored four straight to make it 22-18, forcing an OSU timeout. The 'U' would get as close as one at 23-22, capping an 8-1 run.
