Gophers Welcome SMU for Home Opener

MINNEAPOLIS – The Minnesota women's and men's swimming and diving teams, both ranked No. 25 in the CSCAA rankings, make their home debuts this week at Jean K. Freeman Aquatic Center as they welcome SMU in for a two-day meet.
Action starts Thursday night at 5 p.m. and concludes Friday beginning at 11 a.m. Admission is free both days. Both days of the meet will be streamed on B1G+ (subscription required), while Live scoring will be available on GopherSports.com and the Meet Mobile app (subscription required).
Thursday night is the Gophers' annual "Pack the Pool" event. The first 100 fans get a "Pack the Pool" t-shirt, while Minnesota students will receive free pizza while supplies last. In addition, there will be games, prizes and more.
Minnesota opened the 2022-23 campaign last weekend as the women scored victories over Nebraska and South Dakota, while the men defeated the Coyotes.
Sophomore Hannah Cornish was the top women's performer with four victories, including a pair of individual wins, while junior Kaiser Neverman did the same on the men's side with two solo victories, as well.
In addition to being part of a winning relay, Megan Van Berkom also captured solo wins in the 200 fly and 200 IM, while fifth-year Kate Sullivan swept the distance free events with first-place finishes in the 500 free and 1000 free.
Joining Neverman with multiple solo victories was junior William Christenson, who grabbed wins in the 1000 free and 200 IM.
In diving, fifth-year senior Joy Zhu swept the 1-meter (291.00) and 3-meter (324.35) en route to winning Big Ten Diver of the Week honors, while freshman Drew Bennett did the same for the Gopher men as he claimed victories on both boards while making his collegiate debut.
SMU also opened its season last weekend by hosting the SMU Classic. Both the Mustang men and women finished sixth out of six teams.
