Minnesota Holds Day One Leads Over SMU

MINNEAPOLIS ā The Minnesota men's and women's swimming and diving teams, both ranked No. 25 in the CSCAA Poll, got off to strong starts in their two-day dual with SMU Thursday night at Jean K. Freeman Aquatic Center.Ā
Through one day of competition, the women are up 140-46, while the men hold a 115-70 lead over the Mustangs. Of the 20 events held on the opening day, the Golden Gophers took first in 17 of them and claimed the top two spots in seven.
The women's team saw three victories each for sophomore Hannah Cornish and freshman Ava Yablonski.
The Gopher underclassmen were a part of both relay wins as they partnered with seniors Emma Lezer and Jordan McGinty to win the opening 200 medley relay (1:41.26), while they closed the night with McGinty and senior Olivia Bloomer in winning the 400 free relay (3:24.12).Ā
Individually, Cornish touched first in the 200 free (1:49.72), while Yablonski was the winner of the 100 fly (54.53).
Bloomer also notched a second win by recording first place in the 50 free (23.40), while Lezer did the same in the 100 breast (1:03.34).
In addition, individual victories also went to senior Kate Sullivan in the 1000 free (10:14.34), junior Megan Van Berkom in the 200 IM (2:01.33) and freshman Faith Johnson in the 100 back (55.48).
Diving saw fifth-year senior Joy Zhu win the 3-meter by over 62 points with her score of 341.93.
The men's team was highlighted by three race victories for redshirt junior Lucas Farrar, as well as the season debuts for fifth-year senior Max McHugh and sophomore Bar Soloveychik, both of whom were All-Americans last season.
Farrar nabbed first place as part of the 200 medley relay (1:28.17) along with McHugh, junior Casey Stowe and senior Shane Rozeboom. In an exciting race to end the evening, Farrar, Soloveychik, junior Kaiser Neverman and sophomore Chris Morris won the 400 free relay by outtouching SMU by .01 with a time of 2:59.02.
Individually, Farrar was first in the 50 free with his time of 20.56.
McHugh, meanwhile, notched the first 'B' cut of the season for the Gophers with his first-place finish in the 100 breast (53.07). Soloveychik got his individual win in the 1000 free (9:25.85).
Additional race wins went to Neverman in the 100 fly (47.80) and senior Desmon Sachtjen (49.42).
