Gophers Complete Sweep of SMU

MINNEAPOLIS – The Minnesota men's and women's swimming diving programs, both ranked No. 25 in the preseason CSCAA Poll, completed a two-day dual meet against SMU Friday by sweeping the Mustangs at Jean K. Freeman Aquatic Center.
The Gopher women improved to 3-0 on the dual season by tallying a 260-93 victory, while the men's record moved to 2-0 thanks to a 214-137 triumph.
Junior Megan Van Berkom and sophomore Hannah Cornish were the top performers for the women, who led the Mustangs 140-46 following day one, as they each notched a pair of victories Friday.
Van Berkom's victories were both of the solo variety, highlighted by a win in the 400 IM where she recorded the first NCAA 'B' cut of the season on the team by finishing in a time of 4:16.69, over seven seconds ahead of the field. She picked up a second win in the 200 fly, besting the competition by nearly five seconds with a winning time of 2:00.68.
For Cornish, she scored an individual win in the 100 free (50.31) and was leadoff for the 200 free relay team along with seniors Olivia Bloomer, Maggie Summit and Jordan McGinty that came in first at 1:33.20.
Additional victories Friday belonged to senior Kate Sullivan in the 500 free (4:58.50), junior Paula Rodriguez Rivero in the 200 back (2:01.08) and freshman Grace Drabot in the 200 breast (2:18.38).
In diving, senior Joy Zhu remained undefeated on the young season as she captured first on the 1-meter as her score of 305.25 was 38 points clear of the field.
The men's team, which was up 115-70 heading into Friday's action, got multiple victories from seniors Max McHugh and Desmon Sachtjen and junior Kaiser Neverman.
All three, along with sophomore Chris Morris, posted a victory for the Gophers in the 400 medley relay in 3:14.11, over five seconds faster than second place.
Individually, McHugh posted his second 'B' cut of the weekend by winning the 200 breast (1:56.84), while Sachtjen picked up his first-place finish in the 200 back (1:48.17) and Neverman did the same in the 200 fly (1:48.50).
Sophomore Bar Soloveychik grabbed a win in the 500 free at 4:29.51, while freshman Drew Bennett staked his claim to the 3-meter title with his score of 346.80.
Minnesota is back in action next Friday when it hosts St. Thomas and South Dakota State in a tri-dual. The meet is scheduled to start at 5 p.m. at Jean K.
