'U' Sweeps No. 5 Nebraska to End B1G Play

It's the first Gophers sweep in Lincoln since 1980

LINCOLN, Neb. -- The No. 9 Minnesota Golden Gophers volleyball team swept the No. 5 Nebraska Cornhuskers in three sets, 25-22, 25-23, 25-22 on Saturday evening at the Devaney Center.

Tonight was Minnesota's first sweep in Lincoln since 1980.

With the win, Minnesota improves to 20-8 (15-5 Big Ten). The Gophers finish 7-3 on the road in conference play and 8-4 overall. It's their eight top-25 win of the year, including the third over a top-10 opponent.

Taylor Landfair led the Gophers with 15 kills, five blocks and six digs while Carter Booth went for seven kills and eight blocks. Jenna Wenaas posted eight kills and eight digs and Rachel Kilkelly paced the backcourt with 12 digs.

As a team, Minnesota (20-8, 15-5 Big Ten) hit .243 with 41 kills, 10 team blocks, 51 digs and one ace. Nebraska (24-5, 16-4 Big Ten) hit .153 with 41 kills, five team blocks, 54 digs and three aces.

Whitney Lauenstein and Lindsay Krause led Nebraska with 11 kills.

Set Breakdown:
Set 1: The Huskers started out hot, scoring five of the first seven before Carter Booth got on the board with her first kill to help Minnesota get back within one at 5-4. After an NU point, Mckenna Wucherer tallied her first kill before a 5-1 Huskers run put the home team up 11-6, leading to the first timeout from coach McCutcheon. Kills from Jenna Wenaas and Booth kept the 'U' within four at 12-8, but a 5-2 NU run put the Huskers up 17-10, forcing another Gophers timeout. The Huskers went up as many as eight at 19-11 before Minnesota fought back. Wenaas, Landfair and Arica Davis posted consecutive kills to make it 19-14, forcing a Huskers timeout. The 'U' kept it going after the break, scoring three of the next four to cut the deficit to just two at 20-18. After a kill from NU, Booth answered with a kill before a Wenaas ace made it 21-20, forcing another timeout from NU. The Gophers kept up the pressure, scoring the next four after the timeout to go up 24-21, leading to set point. Minnesota would close it out, 25-22, after a service error by NU.  The Gophers closed the set on a 14-3 run after trailing 19-12. Landfair led the way with five kills while Wenaas had four for the Gophers, which hit .471 compared to Nebraska's .400.

Set 2: The two teams split the first 14 points before the Huskers got a kill and a Minnesota error to go up 9-7. The Gophers answered back, scoring five straight points to take a 12-9 lead and force an NU timeout. Landfair posted two kills and a block and Wenaas registered a kill in the spurt. The 'U' would go up four at 15-11 after blocks from Booth and Wenaas and Booth and Landfair. The Huskers would cut it to two multiple times throughout the next eight points but couldn't get closer. Minnesota went up four 23-19, after two straight solo blocks from Booth. The Gophers would have set point at 24-20, but NU scored three straight to tighten it up to a one-point game, forcing a timeout from coach McCutcheon. An NU service error ended the set and gave Minnesota a 25-23 win to go up 2-0.

Set 3: Minnesota came out firing in the third set, scoring six of the first eight before the Huskers called timeout. Landfair had a kill while Booth had a kill and a block in the spurt. The Huskers would respond, scoring eight of the next nine to take a 10-7 lead, forcing a Gophers timeout. The Huskers would score four of the next five to take a commanding six-point lead, 14-8. Minnesota refused to relent, getting a Landfair kill and an NU service error to cut it to 14-10. A pair of kills from NU's Kubik put the home team up 16-11 before the 'U' went on a 6-1 run to tie it at 17. Wenaas and Landfair had two kills each and Booth had one in the spurt. The Gophers kept their hot play going, getting a kill from Booth and two NU attacking errors to go up 20-17. The Huskers got a kill to slice the lead to two before a kill from Naya Gros and a block from Gros and Shaffmaster put the 'U' up 23-18. NU sliced the lead to just two at 24-22 after a pair of kills and a service ace, leading to a Minnesota timeout. The Gophers finished the match with a kill from Wucherer to win, 25-22.

UP NEXT: Minnesota (20-8, 15-5 Big Ten) finds out its NCAA Tournament seed and location tomorrow night at 6:30 p.m. CT on ESPNU.

Notable:
-Minnesota is 8-8 versus Nebraska under coach McCutcheon, winning five of the last seven in the series. The Gophers have won three out of the last four matches in Lincoln.
-The 'U' finishes 8-7 versus top-25 ranked teams during the regular season.
-The Gophers swept Nebraska in Lincoln for the first time since 1980 (2-0).
-The Gophers (10) posted 10+ blocks for the 18th time this season (14-4 record).
-Carter Booth went for eight blocks, her 11th 5+ block match of 2022.
-Taylor Landfair (15) tallied her 26th 10+ kill match of the year, a Big Ten-best.
-Rachel Kilkelly (12) totaled her seventh 10+ dig match of 2022.
-CC McGraw (13) moved up to 1,886 career digs. She would be the third Gopher to reach 1,900 career digs.
