MINNEAPOLIS – Minnesota freshman Bar Soloveychik made his presence felt as he made his postseason debut on the opening night of the 2022 Big Ten Men's Swimming and Diving Championships in West Lafayette, Ind.
A native of Kiryat Motzkin, Israel, Soloveychik set the Minnesota school record in the 200 free as he led off the Golden Gophers' 800 free relay team. Soloveychik clocked in with a leadoff split of 1:33.56, breaking the mark of 1:34.24 set by Terry Silkaitis at the 2005 Big Ten Championships.
After his record-setting start, Soloveychik gave way to freshman Chris Morris and seniors Cameron Kelley and Tom Donker. The relay team finished fifth in a time of 6:22.25, taking over six seconds off its previous season-best mark.
The Minnesota 200 medley relay team also competed in a time trial after being disqualified in the team competition, notching an NCAA provisional cut in the process. Sophomore Casey Stowe (21.89 back split), senior Max McHugh (22.98 breast), sophomore Kaiser Neverman (20.52 fly) and sophomore Lucas Farrar (19.17 free) combined for a season-best time of 1:24.56.
Minnesota, which is in eighth place with 50 points, returns to the pool Thursday for Day Two of the 2022 Big Ten Championships. Prelims begin at 9 a.m. CT with the 500 free, 200 IM and 50 free on the schedule. One-meter diving starts at 11 a.m., while the finals start at 4:30 with the aforementioned events plus the 400 medley relay.
