Another School Record Taken Down by Soloveychik

MINNEAPOLIS – Two days of competition, two school records for Bar Soloveychik.

One night after setting the school mark in the 200 free, the Minnesota freshman added a program-best time in the 500 free at the 2022 Big Ten Championships in West Lafayette, Ind.

Soloveychik earned the No. 3 seed in the 'A' final and turned in a performance of 4:13.85 to become the first Gopher to break the 4:14 mark. The previous record belonged to Justin Mortimer, whose time of 4:14.21 was set at the 2005 NCAA Championships.

Soloveychik, whose time was good for fourth place and an NCAA provisional cut, was not the only Gopher to compete in the 500 free 'A' final. Sophomore James Freeman claimed eighth place by touching the wall in a 'B' cut and personal record time of 4:18.37.

Fellow sophomore Chris Nagy competed in the 'B' final and finished 14th with a 'B' cut of 4:23.18, .01 off the personal best he set in the prelims. In the 'C' final, sophomore William Christenson came in 21st as he logged a provisional cut and personal record at 4:23.15.

Four Gophers also reached the finals of the 200 IM.

Sophomore Kaiser Neverman ('B' cut of 1:46.46) and junior Desmon Sachtjen (1:48.22) each competed in the 'B' final, finishing in 14th and 16th, respectively. While in the 'C' final, freshman Chris Morris (1:46.80) placed 20th, directly ahead of sophomore Casey Stowe (1:46.92). Morris' time was good for a 'B' cut and personal record, while Stowe recorded a personal best of his own.

The 50 free 'B' final saw redshirt sophomore Lucas Farrar finish in 11th place with a personal record and provisional cut of 19.55.

Meanwhile in diving, junior Jake Butler qualified for the consolation final on the 1-meter board and came in 12th with a score of 352.70.

For the second straight night, Minnesota had a relay team disqualified as the 400 medley relay was deemed to have a swimmer record an early take-off.

"Two relay disqualifications are 100 percent on me and inexcusable in a meet with only eight teams," head coach Kelly Kremer said. "We will learn from this. I could not be more proud of the fight and resilience of this group of me. Tomorrow is a new day."

As a team, Minnesota is in eighth place with 179 points.

Minnesota returns to the pool Friday for Day Three of the 2022 Big Ten Championships. Prelims begin at 9 a.m. CT with the 100 fly, 400 IM, 200 free, 100 breast and 100 back on the schedule. Three-meter diving starts at 11 a.m., while the finals start at 4:30 p.m. with the addition of the 200 free relay.
