Gophers Close Out B1G Invite with Second Varsity Four Win

A win and three runner-up performances led the Gophers this weekend in Florida.
SARASOTA, Fla. -- The Gopher rowing program picked up a win on Saturday morning from the Second Varsity Four boat as the University of Minnesota closed out competition at the second annual B1G Invitational at Nathan Benderson Park, in Sarasota, Fla.
With 16 programs competing at the two-day event including half of the nationally ranked teams in this week's Pocock/CRCA Coaches Poll, Minnesota added a trio of second-place finishes on the water in addition to Saturday's race victory.
Friday Morning Recap
The Maroon & Gold were led by a second-place finish from the First Varsity Eight on Friday morning as the Gophers clocked a time of 6:30.510 -- less than two seconds behind No. 10 Duke at 6:28.757. Minnesota added a trio of third-place finishes in the session from the Second Varsity Four at 7:58.797, the First Novice Eight at 7:24.323 and the Third Varsity Four at 7:47.870. The Second Varsity Eight raced at 6:50.901 and the Second Novice Eight came in at 7:38.536 as both boats finished fourth in their races.

Minnesota closed out the opening day of the B1G Invitational with five third-place finishes and a pair of fourth-place performances. The First Novice Eight opened the session with a third-place finish at 7:06.978 followed by replicated finishes from the Third Varsity Four at 7:57.426, the Second Novice Eight at 7:23.638, the Second Varsity Four at 7:53.195 and the First Varsity Eight at 6:40.900. The Second Varsity Eight clocked at time of 7:01.583 and the First Varsity Four raced at 7:55.131 with both boats finishing fourth to close out the day.

The Gophers closed out the weekend with several of their best performances including a win from the Second Varsity Four boat of Megan Sampson (coxswain), Mel Bartlett, Whitney Holm, Katie Hallahan and Casey Wempner. The Maroon & Gold finished with a time of 7:25.085 ahead of boats from No. 10 Duke, No. 20 Indiana and No. 18 Tennessee. Minnesota also added two more second-place finishes on Saturday with the Third Varsity Four boat opening the day at 7:36.506 and the Second Novice Eight boat coming in at 7:02.932 -- just under two seconds off the pace of Michigan State at 7:01.219. The First Varsity Four boat finished third in its race with a time of 7:49.504 while the First Varsity Eight boat raced at 6:30.040, the Second Varsity Eight boat came in at 6:46.411, and the First Novice Eight boat ran at 7:05.170 as those groups finished fourth in their respective races.
