Gophers Cap Senior Day With Win Over Nittany Lions

4/17/2022 2:20:00 PM | Tennis

Minnesota earns its best win total since 2015

On Sunday, the University of Minnesota women's tennis team squared off with No. 61 Penn State. The Gophers had won 7 of the last 10 matches with the Nittany Lions, and continued their success, earning a 4-2 Senior Day victory. With their win, Minnesota's season win total reached 15, their best since 2015 (17). They will have an opportunity to match that total with a pair of matches next weekend.

The Golden Gophers split the weekend's results, improving to 15-9 on the year, and 3-6 in Big Ten matches. Penn State falls to 10-11 on the season.

Minnesota jumped out to the early lead through doubles wins at No. 1 and No. 2. Sunday marked the 17th time on the season in which they secured the first point.

In doubles No. 2, Rachel Hanford and Dalila Said won each of their six games against Yvonne Zuffova and Olivia Ryan. At No. 1, Ekin Ercetin and Emilee Duong secured the lead for Minnesota, as they defeated the Nittany Lion pairing, 6-2. Maria Rizzolo and Lucy Lu's match at No. 3 went unfinished, on account of previous results.

Minnesota posted singles victories at No. 4, No. 5, and No. 6.

In singles, Dalila Said extended the Gophers' lead, with a straight set win to cap off her Senior Day. This marked Said's eighth win of the season at No. 6. Penn State answered with wins at No. 3, and No. 2, tying the match at two points apiece.

Vasia Karvouni helped Minnesota regain the lead, as she defeated Alexandra Nielsen in straight sets at No. 5. The match was sealed as Maria Rizzolo dominated the third set of her match, winning 6-2. Rachel Hanford's match at No. 1 went unfinished due to previous results.

This marked Minnesota's 9th home win of the season, finishing 9-2 at Baseline Tennis Center.
