Gophers fall 4-3 to Terrapins in College Park
On Sunday, the University of Minnesota women's tennis team traveled to College Park to take on the Maryland Terrapins. The Gophers were coming off a 7-0 win against Rutgers, which was Maryland's lone Big Ten win on the season. The Terrapins entered the match unbeaten at home, and continued their streak this afternoon with a 4-3 win. Four singles points secured the match for the hosts, and earned them a tenth home win of the year.
The Gophers drop to 14-7 on the season, 2-4 in Big Ten matches. They will look to best their 2018 and 2019 win totals next weekend, as they take on Wisconsin.
Minnesota won at doubles positions No. 1 and No. 2, giving them the early lead.
In doubles play, Emilee Duong and Ekin Ercetin won at the first position without dropping a game for the second time this weekend. The duo defeated Marta Perez Mur and Jojo Bach for their fourth win of the season. At doubles No. 2, Rachel Hanford and Dalila Said picked up their third win in three matches, as they downed Maryland's pairing, 6-1. The third position match which featured Vasia Karvouni and Maria Rizzolo went unfinished, on account of the previous results.
Minnesota posted wins at singles No. 5 and No. 6, as Maryland overcame their early doubles deficit.
In singles, the Terrapins quickly rebounded, gaining the lead with a pair of victories at No. 2 and No. 3. Lucy Lu picked up her first conference singles win of the year, defeating Francesca Feodorov in straight sets. Each of the remaining matches went to third sets, as the winner of two would secure the match.
At No. 1, Rachel Hanford's rally fell short, as she was unable to defeat Selma Cadar in the third set. Trailing three games to two, Vasia Karvouni tied the match once more, with a dominant 6-0 third set. The match came down to the fourth position, where Mary Brumfield won the final two games to continue the host's home success.
