Minnesota heads to Madison for Saturday match with Wisconsin
The University of Minnesota tennis team will play their second consecutive road match on Saturday, as they take on the Badgers in Madison. They will play in just one match on the weekend for the first time this season. Minnesota's match against Wisconsin will be their sixth ranked contest of the Big Ten season, as Wisconsin comes in at No. 47 in this week's ITA poll. Minnesota remains ranked for the seventh week in a row, as they place at No. 61 on this week's ITA top 75.
The Gophers take on the Badgers at 12:00 p.m. at Nielsen Tennis Stadium. They will seek their fourth ranked win of the season, and to surpass their 2018 and 2019 win totals of 14. Minnesota will look to move up in the Big Ten standings with a win over the fifth placed Wisconsin Badgers.
Minnesota won last year's meeting in Minneapolis, and have won four of the last five matchups. They will look for their first win in Madison since 2016.
Previous Match
Minnesota played a home and road split weekend against Rutgers and Maryland. On Friday, they hosted the Scarlet Knights in a convincing 7-0 win. The Gophers swept both doubles and singles and earned their third Big Ten win of the season. The match was their 14th victory on the year, matching win totals of 2018 and 2019. On Sunday, they traveled to College Park for a contest with the Maryland Terrapins. After the doubles point went to the Gophers, Maryland earned four of six singles points, edging out Minnesota for their tenth home win of the season. They remained undefeated at home on the year, as the Gophers dropped to 2-4 in the Big Ten, 14-7 overall.
The Competition
Wisconsin is 12-7 on the season, 4-2 in Big Ten matches. The Badgers have conference wins over Rutgers, Maryland, Illinois, and Michigan State, and are 4-1 in matches played in Madison. Their struggles have come in neutral matches, where they are 1-4 on the season. Minnesota won the two teams' last meeting on the Gophers' Senior day, a 5-2 win in Minneapolis.
