Its the first time since 2009 the Gopher women have swept both indoor awards.
MINNEAPOLIS -- University of Minnesota track and field swept the women's Athlete of the Week honors on Wednesday with Amira Young and Shelby Frank both being recognized by the conference office. For Frank it is the second time she has been honored this season for her performance in the weight throw.Â
Frank's Big Ten honor is the fifth of her career and third indoor weekly recognition for the junior. The Grand Forks, N.D., native won the weight throw at the Leonard Hilton Invitational on Jan. 13, in Houston, Texas, with a throw of 22.08m (72-10 1/2). She is the only student-athlete in the country with multiple performances of over 22-meters in the weight throw this season and ranked No. 5 overall in the event with her season-best throw at the Minnesota Icebreaker in December. Frank's season best is also the No. 1 mark in the Big Ten this season by nearly a full meter.Â
Young's recognition is the second of her remarkable career in the Twin Cities. Her only previous honor came in 2021. Thus far this season Young is undefeated in five races over her two meets she has competed in. She won both the 60m and 200m at the Leonard Hilton Invitational in Houston. Her 7.34 winning 60m time nearly matched her season-best time of 7.33 that is ranked No. 15 in the nation this season. That 60m time is also No. 1 in the Big Ten this season. Young's 200m winning time of 24.27 in Houston is also No. 4 in the conference this season as is No. 46 in the nation.Â
The sweep of the two indoor honors for the Minnesota women marks the first time since 2009 that the Gophers have earned the Track and the Field Athletes of the Week from the Big Ten conference. In 2009 it was Elizabeth Yetzer and Kari Schmidt who earned the distinctions.Â
The Gophers next test is the Cyclone Open on Jan. 21, in Ames, Iowa. The team returns home on Jan. 27-28 at the Jack Johnson Classic to end the month of January.Â
