Minnesota Set to Host Penn State for Big Ten Opener

MINNEAPOLIS -- Competing one week after their third-place finish at the Wasatch Classic in West Valley, Utah, the University of Minnesota gymnastics team will host Penn State on Saturday, Jan. 21 at 4 p.m. CT to begin conference play.

Last Time Out
The Maroon and Gold competed against top-end talent at the Wasatch Classic last weekend, going up against UCLA and Olympic Silver Medalist Jordan Chiles in addition to Washington and Boise State.
Freshman Seria Johnson was named Big Ten Freshman of the Week on Wednesday, marking the first time a Gopher has earned the honors since Mya Hooten in 2021. Johnson scored a 39.350 in the all-around last weekend, scoring 9.825 on vault, 9.750 on bars, 9.875 on beam and 9.900 on floor.
The Gophers set a few new personal bests on Saturday, with sophomore Marissa Jencks scoring 9.900 on bars and 9.850 on floor, both career-high scores. In her second all-around performance, junior Gianna Gerdes recorded a career-high score on bars with a 9.875.
Gophers in the Rankings
At the end of week two, Minnesota ranks No. 16 in the nation (up three spots from last week), according to RoadToNationals. The Maroon and Gold rank No. 15 on vault, No. 16 on bars, No. 37 on beam and No. 12 on floor.
Scouting Penn State
Penn State enters their Jan. 21 matchup against the Gophers having defeated six of their eight 2023 opponents, losing to only the University of Pittsburgh and No. 8 Denver.
Entering the 2023 season, the Nittany Lions were ranked No. 35 in the WCGA Preseason Coaches Poll. Penn State returns 14 members of last season's group, while also welcoming four freshmen to their 2023 roster. Their freshmen boast numerous accolades including National Qualifiers, Level 10 Regional Champions and Junior Olympic National Team members.
Sophomore Jessica Johanson competed in 10 meets as a freshmen last season, and has carried her momentum over into 2023 by competing as an all-around competitor in each of Penn State's first two meets. She scored a 39.200 in their last meet against Denver and Texas Women's University. Junior Maddie Johnston also competed as an all-around competitor in the previous meet, adding a 9.850 on bars and 9.750 on beam.
