10/28/2023 5:43:00 PM | Women's Hockey
The University of Minnesota women's hockey team dropped its Saturday contest with the Ohio State Buckeyes 6-5, marking its second loss on the weekend.
Junior goaltender Skylar Vetter stood tall in the crease for the second consecutive game, stopping 46 Buckeye shots on Saturday afternoon.
Ella Huber got the scoring started with a top-shelf power play goal 6:40 into the opening frame, with junior Peyton Hemp assisting. Sophomore Josefin Bouveng kept the scoring going, stealing a puck in the Ohio State zone and putting in the back of the net all by herself to give Minnesota a 2-0 lead just over halfway through the first period.
The Buckeyes broke the game open in the second period by scoring four goals, taking a 4-3 lead into the final period. Ohio State put 23 shots on the Gopher net in period two, increasing Vetter's save total to 34 after 40 minutes of play.
The third period featured another four goals, two for Minnesota and two for Ohio State. Nelli Laitinen scored her second goal of the day 5:19 into the final frame, marking her first multi-goal game of her career.
Minnesota brought the game within one as Peyton Hemp found the back of the net with just over 1:30 to go. The Gophers weren't able to equalize in the final 90 seconds, and the score read 6-5 at the final horn.
Quotable
"Certainly frustrated with the result here tonight, but at the same time very encouraged here early in the year," head coach Brad Frost said. "We were down late, but generated some grade-A chances in the last 30 seconds to tie it up. We certainly have some things we can learn from and get better at, and we will do that, but again, I love the fight of this team."
Notable
- Skylar Vetter recorded 46 saves, second straight game with 45+ saves
- Ella Huber notches fourth multi-point game this season after scoring one goal and adding two assists
- Josefin Bouveng recorded three assists and one goal, marking a career-high four points in a single game
- Nelli Laitinen records her first-career multi-goal game
