The No. 4 ranked Golden Gopher women's hockey team returns to Minnesota for a home-and-home series with the Mavericks of Minnesota State (2-6-0). Last Time Out
The Maroon and Gold fell to No. 2 Ohio State on Friday and Saturday of last week, losing by one goal in each of the two games. Friday's contest went to overtime, with the Buckeyes scoring in the extra frame to claim victory. Abbey Murphy shined once again, scoring two goals in the contest. Saturday's game featured an explosion of offense from both teams, with 11 total goals scored. After losing an early lead, the Gophers fought back into the game late in the third period but couldn't even the score, leading to a 6-5 defeat.
Rematch Against the Mavericks
Minnesota faces Minnesota State for the first time this season, competing in a home-and-home series on Friday and Saturday. Last season the Maroon and Gold won all four matchups with the Mavericks, winning by a combined score of 30-5. In the two teams' final matchup of 2022-23, Taylor Heise scored a hat trick in the Gophers' 6-0 win. A new season provides new faces, and Minnesota will look to continue their success against Minnesota State in 2023-24.
Scouting the Mavericks
The Mavericks have started the season to the tune of a 2-6-0 record and have started slow in WCHA play. Senior forward Jamie Nelson leads Minnesota State with five goals scored this season, while also adding three assists. She's made an impact on both ends of the ice, as she's blocked 10 shots as well. The Mavericks will look to pick up their first home victory of the season on Saturday, as they're winless in their first four matchups at Mayo Clinic HSEC
Multiple Gopher Contributors
The Maroon and Gold have had various players make an impact in their first five games of the season. Redshirt junior Abbey Murphy has led the scoring charge, scoring nine goals in seven games to start the season. Junior Ella Huber has registered 11 points in the first seven games (5g, 6a). Freshman Ava Lindsay has scored twice in seven games, stepping up on the Gophers' offensive attack. Fellow freshman Emma Kreisz has scored one goal and added three assists this season. A. Lindsay and Kreisz, partners on Minnesota's third line, have flashed tremendous chemistry in their first year with the Gophers.
Stout Goaltending
Goaltender Skylar Vetter set the program record with 52 saves against Ohio State on Oct. 27, beating the previous record of 51 set by Noora Raty. Vetter has recorded two shutouts so far this season. Fifth-year transfer Lucy Morgan has also recorded a shutout this season, providing the Gophers high-quality depth.
Experience on Defense
The Gophers have three fifth-year seniors in their defensive group, with Madeline Wethington, Solveig Neunzert and Taylor Stewart anchoring Minnesota's back line thus far in 2023-24. The trio has aided the Maroon and Gold's success that allowed their opponents to score just two goals through their first five contests. Sophomore Nelli Laitinen, the reigning WCHA Defender of the Week, and Emily Zumwinkle have also played critical roles on Minnesota's defense.
Captains Leading the Way
Junior Peyton Hemp was named team captain this fall for the first time in her career, while Madeline Wethington, Abbey Murphy and Ella Huber were named assistant captains, also the first time they've worn a letter. All three of the Gopher leaders have made their presence felt thus far in 2023-24, with Murphy scoring nine goals, Huber registering 11 points, Hemp scoring twice and assisting twice, and M. Wethington scoring one goal and assisting three goals.
Newcomers Making an Impact
Freshman Ava Lindsay scored her second collegiate goal on Oct. 17 against St. Cloud State, a critical play in a 2-1 victory. Fellow freshman Emma Kreisz also added two assists on the night. Fifth-year transfers Taylor Stewart and Solveig Neunzert have also played substantial roles on Minnesota's defense.
Scoring Milestones on the Horizon
After adding 15 points in the first seven games, Abbey Murphy now sits at 75 career points (42g, 33a), and is on pace to quickly approach the century mark.
