2023-24 rowing officially underway

MINNEAPOLIS - It was a perfect day for competition Saturday as the Golden Gophers rowing team officially began their 2023-24 campaign at the 43rd Annual Head of the Mississippi Regatta hosted by the Minneapolis Rowing Club.

Minnesota sent a total of 11 boats to the waters of the Mississippi River across four events and rowed approximately three miles upstream. The Gophers turned in four race wins, highlighted by a dominating effort from their First and Second Varsity Eight boats.

It was the first time competing in the Maroon and Gold for nine members of the varsity team as well as 18 on the novice squad as they all began their collegiate rowing careers.

From Coach Strodel's Desk
"Every year we are able to make a first impression at this regatta," Strodel said. "Walking away from this race, my impression is that we have a group that is willing to bring the right attitude and intensity to compete at a high level. Those traits showed out on the racecourse today. We have a great deal of work to do technically and rhythmically but that will come with more practice. I'm proud of the way all our Gophers competed, from our first years to our 5th years, and the standard they set."
