Second Period Scoring Sends Gophers to Sweep of Bulldogs
11/18/2023 6:00:00 PM | Women's Hockey
The University of Minnesota women's hockey team completed a sweep of the Minnesota Duluth Bulldogs with a 3-1 win on Saturday night at AMSOIL Arena.
Abbey Murphy continued to lead the scoring charge for the Gophers, scoring one of two Minnesota goals in the second period. Ella Huber found the back of the net for the first goal of the evening, assisted by Josefin Bouveng and Murphy. Peyton Hemp's third-period goal added to the Gopher lead and gave them a two-goal advantage that held to the final horn.
Fifth-year goaltender Lucy Morgan got the start in net for Minnesota, stopping 28 Bulldog shots and earning her fourth win of the season.
Neither team found the back of the net in the opening frame, despite the Gophers putting 17 shots on the Bulldog net. Minnesota wasn't able to capitalize on any of their three powerplay opportunities, but also stifled two Minnesota Duluth powerplay chances.
The Maroon and Gold struck with one fewer skater in the second period as Murphy scored for the 12th time this season, Minnesota's second short-handed goal of the year. Huber followed it up with another goal just under seven minutes later, giving the Gophers a 2-0 lead heading into the final frame.
Hemp's goal was a matter of executing on a right-place-right-time opportunity, as she found the puck while in stride and sent it to the back of the net for the only goal of the third period.
Quotable
"Fantastic weekend here on the road, just a resilient group effort," head coach Brad Frost said. "Lucy [Morgan] played great tonight, shutting the door for us. We're doing really great things, continuing to build on what we're trying to do. We're really happy with the big six points on the road and we're looking forward to traveling out next week over thanksgiving and having a great weekend."
