Gophers Travel to Washington, D.C. for Matchups With Harvard and Cornell

11/22/2023 5:30:00 PM | Women's Hockey

The No. 4 ranked Golden Gopher women's hockey team travels east for the D1 in DC event, where it will take on Harvard (1-9-1) on Friday, Nov. 24 and No. 8 Cornell (10-2-1) on Saturday, Nov. 25. All games will be streamed on the Junior Women's Hockey League YouTube channel.

Last Time Out
The Maroon and Gold swept Minnesota Duluth after wins on Nov. 17 and Nov. 18 at AMSOIL Arena last weekend. The Gophers had multiple players contribute, with Peyton Hemp and Abbey Murphy each scoring twice, Taylor Stewart finding the back of the net, and Josefin Bouveng adding two assists. Minnesota's goaltending was stout, as it's been so far this season, as Skylar Vetter stopped 32 shots on Friday and Lucy Morgan stopped 28 shots on Saturday. They each allowed just one goal in their starts.

D1 in DC Overview
Minnesota, Harvard, Cornell and St. Thomas will all be traveling to Arlington, Va. for the D1 in DC event. Minnesota won both of its two matchups with St. Thomas this season, and will face the Tommies two more times in 2023-24. Games will take place at Medstar Capitals Iceplex, with Minnesota and Harvard squaring off on Friday before the Gophers take on the Big Red on Saturday.

Scouting the Opposition
Laura Bellamy's Crimson have struggled out of the gates this season, recording one win in their first 11 games. One of those losses came to Cornell, as the Big Red won 5-1 on Nov. 10. Shannon Hollands paces Harvard with six points so far this season, scoring two goals and adding four assists. Gabi Davidson Adams leads the Crimson with three goals scored.

For the Big Red, they're coming off two consecutive losses at the hands of No. 9 Quinnipiac and No. 13 Princeton. Prior to those two games, Cornell had won seven straight games.

Multiple Gopher Contributors
The Maroon and Gold have had various players make an impact to start the year. Redshirt junior Abbey Murphy has led the scoring charge, scoring 12 goals in 11 games to start the season. Junior Ella Huber has registered 12 points in the first 11 games (6g, 6a). Freshman Ava Lindsay has scored three times, stepping up on the Gophers' offensive attack. Fellow freshman Emma Kreisz has scored twice and added five assists this season. A. Lindsay and Kreisz, often linemates, have flashed tremendous chemistry in their first year with the Gophers. Nelli Laitinen has found the back of the net four times, becoming a major contributor for the Maroon and Gold in her sophomore campaign.

Stout Goaltending
Goaltender Skylar Vetter set the program record with 52 saves against Ohio State on Oct. 27, beating the previous record of 51 set by Noora Raty. Vetter has recorded two shutouts and five wins so far this season. Fifth-year transfer Lucy Morgan has also recorded a shutout and four wins this season, providing the Gophers high-quality depth this season. Morgan and Vetter each allowed just one goal in wins against Minnesota Duluth on Nov. 17 and Nov. 18

Defense Acting as an Anchor
The Gophers' three fifth-years -- Taylor Stewart, Madeline Wethington and Solveig Neunzert -- have been key pieces to a strong Minnesota defense this season. Nelli Laitinen has taken a step forward in an increased role in her sophomore season, scoring four goals and assisting five goals in 11 games. Laitinen was named WCHA Defender of the Week after a series versus Ohio State in which scored two goals and added two assists.

Captains Leading the Way
Junior Peyton Hemp was named team captain this fall for the first time in her career, while Madeline Wethington, Abbey Murphy and Ella Huber were named assistant captains, also the first time they've worn a letter. All three of the Gopher leaders have made their presence felt thus far in 2023-24, with Murphy scoring 12 goals, Huber registering 12 points, Hemp scoring four goals and assisting three times, and M. Wethington scoring one goal and assisting four goals.

Newcomers Making an Impact
Freshman Ava Lindsay has not only scored three goals so far, but made timely plays. Her goal against Minnesota State on Nov. 3 was critical in a 3-1 win. Fellow freshman Emma Kreisz has also given Minnesota a boost, scoring a goal in the Gophers' 2-1 win on Nov. 4. Fifth-year transfers Taylor Stewart and Solveig Neunzert have also played substantial roles on Minnesota's defense.

Scoring Milestones on the Horizon
After adding 19 points in the first 11 games, Abbey Murphy now sits at 87 career points (49g, 38a), and is on pace to quickly approach the century mark. Madeline Wethington also added to her pursuit of 100 career points by scoring one goal and four assists so far this year. She now sits at 82 career points (23g, 59a). Peyton Hemp sits at 68 career points (32g, 36a) after the Gophers' first 11 games in 2022-23.

Quest for Eighth National Title
Minnesota has won seven national championships (2000, 2004, 2005, 2012, 2013, 2015, and 2016) and looks for a historic eighth title national crown in 2023-24.
