Gophers improve to 5-4 on the season with home win against the Utes
Minneapolis – The University of Minnesota tennis program earned a 4-3 victory against Utah at Baseline Tennis Center on Friday. The win, which was Minnesota's first-ever against Utah, moved the Gophers to 5-4 on the season. Minnesota was previously 0-9 all-time against Utah.Â
Minnesota jumped out to a 1-0 lead in the match after winning first and second doubles. At No. 1 doubles, Minnesota's Zoey Weil and Zeyneb Sarioglan claimed a 7-5 comeback victory against Madison Tattini and Anastasi Goncharova. Anet Koskel and Aiva Schmitz rallied against the Utes duo of Samantha Horwood and Marcela Lopez at the second position to win 7-6 (4).
In singles, Utah earned points at the fifth and sixth positions as Minnesota did not have enough competitors to field the positions.Â
Weil tied the match 2-2 with a win at second singles, as she beat Tattini 6-1, 6-0. Sarioglan gave the Gophers the lead with a 6-4, 6-1 victory versus Goncharova at No. 4 singles.Â
Utah evened the match 3-3 when Kaila Barksdale topped Schmitz 6-0, 3-6, 6-3 at No. 3 singles.Â
Koskel gave Minnesota its fifth win of the season as she beat Katya Townsend 7-5, 4-6, 6-3 at No. 1 singles.Â
