Minnesota returns to competition on Saturday morning
The University of Minnesota men's golf team began its spring 2023 campaign today with a 5-0 victory against Nebraska in the quarterfinals of the Big Ten Match Play. The two-day event is being held at the par-72, 6,981 yard Hammock Beach Ocean Course in Palm Coast, Fla.Â
Minnesota will face Northwestern, which beat Maryland 3-2-0, in the semifinals. Michigan and Indiana also advanced to the semifinals. The winners will face once another and compete for a championship, while the losers will battle for third placeÂ
"Coach Bell and I saw a level of play from our guys that validates all the great work they have put in recently," said Minnesota head coach Justin Smith. "We are excited for the opportunity tomorrow to go up against one of the best teams in our conference. We can't wait to watch our guys compete tomorrow."
Bennett Swavely and Harrison Arnold posted big wins for the Gophers. Swavely secured a 6&5 win against Caleb Badura and Arnold beat Jeremy Sisson 4&2.Â
Swavely won the second hole and never looked back as he handled Badura. The sophomore was 4 up after nine and then won holes 11 and 12 before halving 13 to end the match and put Minnesota on the board early.Â
Arnold never trailed in his match as he and Sisson halved the first three holes. Arnold then won the next four consecutive holes and won by the same margin.Â
The only match to go the distance for the Gophers was Jacob Pedersen against Evan McDermott. The match was level or Pedersen trailed 1 down for the first 12 holes. He then went 1 up on No. 15 only to see the match tied again after the 15th hole. Pedersen earned the win and the clean sweep for the Gophers with a four on his 18th hole, while McDermott carded a six. Â Â
