Pharrel Payne led Minnesota with 14 points and added six rebounds and three blocked shots, Jaden Henley added eight points and a career-high seven rebounds, and Joshua Ola-Joseph had eight points, but Maryland (16-7, 7-5 B1G) posted a 81-46 win over the Gophers Saturday night at Williams Arena.
Minnesota (7-15, 1-11) was limited to eight players in the game, as the Gophers were without leading scorer and rebounder Dawson Garcia and guard Braeden Carrington.
Ta'Lon Cooper finished with five points to reach the 1,000-point milestone midway through the first half. Cooper scored 773 points in three seasons (95 games) at Morehead State and has now scored 231 in 22 games this season. His scoring average of 10.5 ppg is the highest in his four collegiate seasons.
Today marks the 95th anniversary of the first game ever played at Williams Arena, a 42-40 double-overtime loss to Ohio State on Feb. 4, 1928.
The Gophers head to Champaign, Ill., to face Illinois on Tuesday, Feb. 7, at 7:30 p.m. CDT on BTN.
