Harrison Arnold, Antoine Sale lead Minnesota with 2.5 points on the weekend
The University of Minnesota men's golf team opened its spring season with a fourth-place finish at the Big Ten Match Play after a pair of ties on Saturday. The Gophers, who won their Friday quarterfinal match 5-0 against Nebraska, went 2-2-1 against both Northwestern and Indiana on Saturday.Â
In the morning, the Gophers tied Northwestern in their semifinal meeting. The Wildcats advanced to the championship match because they won more total holes than Minnesota.Â
The Gophers regrouped and battled a tough Indiana team in the third-place match, rallying back from early deficits to earn the tie. Indiana took third because they won more total holes than Minnesota.Â
"We are very proud of our guys for how they competed this weekend," said head coach Justin Smith. "Today in both matches, we didn't get off to the best starts but our guys really rallied hard to draw even with Northwestern and Indiana. We have plenty of things to work on and clean up but this is a solid start that we can draw a lot of positives from."
Harrison Arnold and Antoine Sale led the Gophers on the weekend as they each earned 2.5 points. Lincoln Johnson and Jacob Pedersen added two points for Minnesota and Bennett Swavely put one on the board for the Maroon and Gold.
The two-day match place event was held at the par-72, 6,981 yard Hammock Beach Ocean Course in Palm Coast, Fla.Â
