Junior Mya Hooten stole the show, scoring a career-high 39.675 in the all-around, tying a career high 9.975 on vault, and ending the night with her fifth career perfect 10 on floor. Her performance earned her Big Ten Co-Gymnast of the Week, sharing the honor with Friday competitor Abby Heiskell of Michigan.
Minnesota had a tremendous performance on floor from the entire lineup, finishing with a team score of 49.550 (the ninth-highest score in program history). Senior Halle Remlinger also tied her career high with a score of 9.950, and junior Gianna Gerdes and freshman Seria Johnson each scored 9.875.
Gophers in the Rankings
Minnesota came in at No. 19 in the RoadToNationals rankings once again this week, with event rankings of No. 10 on vault, No. 43 on beam, No. 7 on floor and No. 15 on bars.
Scouting Michigan
The No. 2 Wolverines come off a first-place victory over Southern Connecticut, Rutgers and Fisk ahead of their matchup with the Gophers. In their Feb. 3 win they finished with a final score of 198.300, the second highest score in program history. The Wolverines had two perfect 10s on vault on Friday night, one from Sierra Brooks and the other from Abby Heiskell. Their team vault score was 49.750, the highest of any event that evening.
The 2021 National Champions are 6-2 so far in 2023, with their two losses coming against No. 1 Oklahoma in week two and against in-state rival No. 14 Michigan State on Jan. 22.
Brooks has been outstanding for the Wolverines in 2023, earning no lower than a 9.900 on vault in four meets this season. The same can be said for floor, as her lowest score of the year was a 9.900 in week two. Heiskell has also been tremendous in 2023, ranking No. 11 on floor, No. 19 on vault and No. 20 on bars nationally.
Head coach Bev Plocki enters her 34th season at the helm of the program. During her tenure, she's led the Wolverines to 25 Big Ten championships, the most by any coach, in any sport, in Big Ten history. She's led the team to 26 NCAA Championship appearances and 10 NCAA Super Six berths as well.
