Gophers Headed to Loaded Windy City Invite

Nine Power 5 program will compete in total.
MINNEAPOLIS -- Minnesota's track and field program is sending a full squad of student-athletes to the 2023 Windy City Invitational this weekend at Gately Stadium in Chicago, Ill. Field events begin at 2 p.m. on Friday with running events starting at 2:40 p.m. On Saturday, running events start at 12:50 p.m. and field events at 11:30 a.m.
About the 2023 Windy City Invitational
The meet will include a season-high nine Power 5 programs including Indiana, Michigan State, Purdue, Michigan State, Stanford, Oklahoma, Notre Dame, UCLA along with the Golden Gophers. Additionally Howard, Tulsa, Loyola and South Florida will compete. Live results will be available via AdkinsTiming.com.
Last Time Out: Meyo Invite & Gopher Classic
The University of Minnesota track and field program stood out at the Meyo Invite with six different event victories and five program top 10 marks and times. Additionally the Gophers had a few outstanding performances at the Gopher Classic back in the Twin Cities.
In Notre Dame, the Maroon and Gold got a NCAA top-10 performance from Amira Young in the 60m final, posting a lifetime best 7.24 to capture the victory. Minnesota's triple jumpers had the team's first split victory of the season with Diarra Sow and Tiera Robinson-Jones both leaping 12.83m (42-1 1/4). The fifth program top 10 mark on Saturday was the Gophers winning 4x400m relay team. The squad of Jayla Campbell, Janielle Josephs, Dyandra Gray and Abigail Schaaffe clocked a 3:37.23. The time is the seventh fastest time in school history and is the third-fastest in the Big Ten so far this season.
Amira Young Honored by Big Ten For Second Time
University of Minnesota track and field graduate student Amira Young has been honored by the Big Ten as the Track Athlete of the Week for the second time this season, the conference office announced Wednesday. Last weekend at the Meyo Invitational the Chicago, Ill.,native won both the 60m and the 200m clocking a Big Ten-best 7.24 in the 60m. Her 60m time was a lifetime best time and improved on her NO. 2 time in program history and was just 0.02 off the school record set back in 2002. Young's No. 1 Big Ten 60m time is tied for the 12th fastest time in the NCAA this season. Her 200m victory came in a time of 23.79, just 0.07 off of her season-best time which is currently ranked No. 6 in the Big Ten this season. Young is the leader of the Gophers' 60m group that is ranked No. 1 in the Big Ten on the USTFCCCA 60m 'Event Squad' Rankings and is No. 5 in the nation as of Feb. 6.

University of Minnesota track and field was ranked No. 3 in the Midwest Regional USTFCCCA rankings that came out this past week. The team is also No. 2 in the Big Ten conference rankings. Individually the Maroon and Gold have nine top 30 marks in the NCAA this season and have seven different marks that are inside the Big Ten's top three so far this season.
Most notably, the Gophers have three No. 1 Big Ten marks this season with Nyalaam Jok (high jump) and Amira Young (60m) and Shelby Frank (Weight Throw) all atop their respective events as of Feb. 9.

Minnesota's final indoor regular season tune up will be the Snowshoe Open on Feb. 17, hosted at the U of MN Field House in Minneapolis. The Snowshoe Open will be the final meet before the Gophers travel to the Big Ten Indoor Championships in Geneva, Ohio, from Feb. 24-25.
