MINNEAPOLIS -- The University of Minnesota track and field program claimed three victories at the 2023 Windy City Invitational this weekend highlighted by a Big Ten record in the 60m by graduate student Amira Young. In total the Gophers also posted three top 20 NCAA marks in Chicago.
Young's performance on the straightaway came on Friday night when the Chicago, Ill., native dropped a 7.19 in the 60m final to win the competition. The time for Young dropped her lifetime best from 7.24 to 7.19 and goes down as the No. 1 time in Big Ten history and breaks a 21-year school record previously held by Tahesia Harrigan. Her 7.19 is currently ranked No. 10 in the nation this season.
In that same 60m final Akilah Lewis clocked her own lifetime best in the event at 7.21, which is now tied for No. 2 in Big Ten history. Lewis' time is tied for No. 15 in the NCAA this season and makes her the second fastest Gopher in program history.
Another NCAA top 20 mark came in the final event raced by the Maroon and Gold in Chicago. The women's 4x400m relay team clocked a season-best 3:35.66 to finish as the runner-up in the event to Stanford. The team of Jayla Campbell, Dyandra Gray, Janielle Josephs and Abigail Schaaffe bested their previous time to sit in the No. 19 slot in the NCAA and the No. 3 slot in program history.
Four other program top 10 times were dropped at the Windy City Invitational, three of them coming on Friday and one on Saturday. Friday's action started with Maja Maunsbach put down a 8.38 in the 60m hurdles prelims to advance to the final with the No. 4 mark in program history. That time was bested just a short time later by teammate Zariyah Black in the final. Black dropped a lifetime best time of 8.35 to move into that No. 4 spot at Minnesota and puts her at the No. 8 spot in the Big Ten this season.
Anastasia Korzenowski put down her best indoor mile time of her career a short time later. Korzenowski's 4:42.53 was the No. 9 time in school history but was bumped to No. 10 after teammate Erin Reidy clocked a 4:42.31 on Saturday afternoon.
Other notable performances at Gately Stadium included Young in the 200m, posting a season-best 23.53 to finish as the event's runner-up. Young's time goes down as the No. 1 time in the Big Ten this season, besting Iowa's Lasarah Hargrove who had the lead at 23.57. Tiera Robinson-Jones won the women's triple jump with a mark of 12.73m (41-11 1/4) while Lexy Berger finished as the runner-up in Chicago in the pole vault with a clearance of 4.17m (13-8 1/4).
