Del Angel, Zhu Clinch Spots to NCAAs

MINNEAPOLIS ā The Minnesota women punched two tickets to the NCAA Swimming and Diving Championships Tuesday on the first day of the Zone D Diving Championships at the Jean K. Freeman Aquatic Center.Ā
Freshman Vivi Del Angel and fifth-year senior Joy Zhu both qualified on the 3-meter springboard.
Del Angel was fifth through the prelims following a personal-best score of 326.05. She then smashed that mark with a 340.05 in the finals to place fourth overall. Her finals score is good for 12th all-time in Minnesota history.
Two spots behind Del Angel was Zhu. After a prelims score of 311.30 put her in ninth place, Zhu added 36 points to her score for a 347.00 in the finals. That vaulted her up to sixth place, safely ahead of the ninth-place finish that was needed to qualify.
Also reaching the finals was junior Av Osero. She was 12th through prelims with her score of 305.85, and she remained there after a performance of 329.15 in the finals.
In the prelims, junior Megan Phillip finished 19th with a score of 290.95, while freshman Addie Albrecht was 38th with her tally of 249.75.
On the men's side, freshman Andrew Bennett reached the finals of the 1-meter after a score of 298.75 put him in 15th place through the prelims. Despite breaking his own personal record in the finals with a score of 320.90, Bennett's 12-dive total of 619.65 put him 16th and outside of the top-seven finish he needed to qualify for NCAAs.
The Zone Diving Championships continue Wednesday with the women on the 1-meter and the men moving to the 3-meter. Results can be found on DiveMeets.com and B1G+ will stream the event for free.
