Gophers captured seven titles over the three-day competition.
MINNEAPOLIS – The University of Minnesota wrapped up the 2023 regular season in Des Moines, Iowa, at the 113th Drake Relays. Minnesota captured seven titles over three days and registered three program top 10 performances with the men's team finishing second overall and the women's team placing third (five relay events scored).
Kostas Zaltos' victory in the men's hammer throw was the highlight of the weekend for the Golden Gophers. Zaltos' record-breaking performance came on the redshirt-junior's second throw of the competition, a throw that registered a distance of 75.27m (246-11). The performance from Zaltos returns the Greek national to the top of the NCAA leaderboards and breaks Sean Donnelly's 2016 school record of 74.35m (243-11). It is the No. 10 mark in the world this year according to the IAAF and makes Zaltos the 17th college male to throw 75.27m or further ever. Zaltos' mark also broke the Drake Relays record in the 113th year of the event.
Behind, but not overshadowed, in the men's hammer throw final was Jake Kubiatowicz. The graduate student posted a lifetime best in the event to finish as the meet's runner up at 69.69m (228-4). Kubiatowicz's mark is the fourth-furthest in program history and catapults him to the No. 15 spot in the NCAA this season and the No. 3 spot in the Big Ten.
Minnesota's other top 10 program performance came from Finn Schirmer in the men's 110m hurdles. Placing fourth overall Schirmer clocked a wind-legal time of 14.11 to rise to the No. 4 spot in Minnesota history.
Schirmer paired his 110m hurdles performance by aiding the Maroon and Gold's 4x100m relay team later in the day. The team of Carlon Hosten, Kion Benjamin, Schirmer and Devin Augustine posted a time of 39.30 to claim the title at the Drake Relays. Minnesota's women completed the 4x100m relay sweep for the 'U' just moments before, clocking a 44.60 with the squad of Odell Frye, Lauren Hansen, Akilah Lewis and Amira Young.
Minnesota's sprint group continued to show why it is one of the best on both the men's and women's side with Young claiming the 100m title in a time of 11.31 while Carlon Hosten was the men's runner-up by tying his season-best time of 10.28. Behind Young in the women's 100m final were teammates Akilah Lewis (4th, 11.57) and Odell Frye (5th, 11.60).
Isaiah Schafer was the lone Golden Gopher to claim a Drake Relays championship prior to Saturday's competition. The first-year Gopher was the winner of the shot put on Friday, launching his second-furthest mark of the season at 19.21 (63-0 1/4) to claim victory.
Minnesota's final victory of the 113th Drake Relays was the women's 4x400m relay team on Saturday. The team comprised of Jayla Campbell, Janielle Josephs, Young and Hansen put down a 3:37.48 through the heavy rain to win three consecutive relays to conclude the meet on Saturday. For Young and Hansen, the performance came just 30 minutes after their winning run in the 4x100m relay.
Other significant performances at the Drake Relays for Minnesota included Shelby Frank (Unattached Discus, 1st, 56.81m), Kaleb Siekmeier (Discus, 3rd, 54.47m), Campbell (400m, 2nd, 53.84), Josephs (400m, 3rd, 53.98), Kubiatowicz (Discus, 6th, 54.47m), Schafer (Hammer, 6th, 63.57m), Jaydon Antoine (Long Jump, 4th, 7.28m), Maunsbach (100m Hurdles, 2nd, 13.45), men's 4x400m relay (2nd, 3:10.19) and Austin Parsons (Javelin, 3rd, 68.29m).
