The Gophers nearly swpet the men's Midwest Region Awards.

MINNEAPOLIS -- The University of Minnesota men's track and field program won a trio of USTFCCCA Regional Awards with Matthew Wilkinson earning the Midwest Region Track Athlete of the Year, Kostas Zaltos winning the Field Athlete of the Year and Associate Head Coach Peter Miller earning his second Midwest Region Assistant Coach of the Year of the 2022-23 season.

Wilkinson, who hails from Greenwood, Minnesota, started his postseason with a bang, winning both the steeplechase and 5000 meters at the Big Ten Outdoor Track & Field Championships – becoming the first athlete to accomplish that feat since Mason Ferlic in 2016. Just about one month later, Wilkinson finished fifth in the steeplechase at the 2023 NCAA DI Outdoor Track & Field Championships. Wilkinson finished with the No. 2 time in the NCAA in the steeplechase this season at 8:29.35. He also was named the Big Ten Athlete of the Championships after scoring 20 team points and leading Minnesota to a 2nd-place team finish.

Zaltos, who hails from Kilikis, Greece, finished runner-up in the hammer at the 2023 NCAA DI Outdoor Track & Field Championships with a lifetime best of 76.33m (250-5). He won five event finals this season, including victories at the Big Ten Outdoor Championships and Drake Relays He won his third-straight Big Ten title in the hammer throw on his final attempt, which resulted in a Big Ten Championship record mark of 74.93m (245-10). Zaltos also finished the college season with the No. 2 mark in the NCAA and the No. 21 mark in the world (as of June 12, 2023).

Peter Miller, the Associate Head Track Coach at Minnesota, is recognized as the Men's Assistant Coach of the Year in the Midwest Region. Miller pairs his outdoor honor with his indoor Women's Midwest Assistant Coach of the Year award. His coaching expertise contributed to the team's impressive 20th place finish at the national championships, earning 15 points. Under Miller's guidance, Minnesota athletes achieved outstanding performances, including two First Team All-Americans. Notable achievements include Kostas Zaltos' Big Ten Championship in the Hammer, setting a meet record with a throw of 74.93m. Austin Parsons achieved a school record in the Javelin with a throw of 72.15m. Isaiah Schafer achieved a fourth place finish in the shot put, marking the fourth best performance in Minnesota's history. Jake Kubiatowicz secured a sixth place finish in the men's hammer throw, recording a distance of 72.40m at the NCAA finals. Miller's expertise in throwing events has led to Minnesota's hammer squad being ranked number one both in 2023 and all-time.
