Gophers Competing Around the World

7/5/2023 9:55:00 AM | Men's Track & Field, Women's Track & Field

MINNEAPOLIS - University of Minnesota has a large group of competitors around the world that will be aiming to punch their tickets to the 2023 World Athletics Championships that will be held in Budapest, Hungary in August. A total of 16 athletes, both current and alumni, are set to compete.

Two 2023 First Team All-Americans will compete at the 2023 USATF Outdoor Championships, with Matt Wilkinson contesting the 3000m steeplechase while Shelby Frank will throw the discus. After a stellar 2022-23 campaign Amira Young will take her talents to Eugene and will compete in the 100m. A slew of alums will also take part in Eugene with Alec Basten (3000m steeplechase), Abby Kohut-Jackson (3000m steeplechase), Maddie Strandemo (3000m steeplechase), Bethany Hasz (5000m) and Sean Donnelly (Hammer Throw).

Also taking place this week are the Greek National Championships that take place from July 7-9 at Panthessaliko Stadium in Volos Greece. Kostas Zaltos, the NCAA runner-up, along with recent signee Angelos Mantzouranis will compete in the hammer throw competition. In Jamaica from July 6-9 the Maroon and Gold have a trio of competitors with current student-athletes Janielle Josephs (400m) and Michael Buchanan (110m hurdles, long jump), along with University of Minnesota graduate Nayoka Clunis in the hammer throw.

At the end of July Minnesota will also see its Trinidad & Tobago student-athletes compete at their nations national championships. That event begins on July 28 and concludes on July 30 with Carlon Hosten, Devin Augustine and Kion Benjamin all competing in various sprint events.
