MINNEAPOLIS – The University of Minnesota saw Victory Godah make her highly anticipated debut for the Maroon and Gold, winning the 60m, while the rest of the Gophers picked up six other victories at the 2024 Jack Johnson Classic at the University Fieldhouse on Saturday.
The meet for Godah, a native of Nigeria, was her first at an indoor facility in her career. Bringing in personal best 100m time of 11.28, Godah made her 60m debut with a preliminary time of 7.47 to move on to the final where she dropped a time of 7.39. The 7.39 60m time goes down as the No. 6 time in program history and is a top 50 NCAA time this season.
Minnesota's throwers had a stellar day, with Shelby Frank and Annie Nabwe leading the way. Frank, the reigning Big Ten champion, launched her winning mark of 23.36m (76-7 3/4) on her fourth attempt and also had throws of 22.42m and 22.04m. The mark improves her third-ranked mark on the NCAA list this season. For Nabwe, her 21.94m (71-11 3/4) is a personal best and keeps her at No. 4 in program history and keeps her inside the NCAA top 10 this season.
Nabwe was not only effective in the weight throw, but in the shot put as well. The redshirt freshman won the women's shot put with a throw of 16.47m (54-0 1/2), which puts her at No. 6 in school history and 18th in the NCAA this year.
Of Minnesota's victories, the first came on Friday in the form of Sofia Condon and Lexy Berger in the women's pole vault. Saturday's victories consisted of: Zariyah Black (60m hurdles 8.54) and Alliyah McNeil (high jump - 1.76m; long jump 5.75m).
The 'U' also had a number of men's student-athletes compete unattached on Saturday. Six Gophers won their events, highlighted by Kostas Zaltos who posted a new Greek national record in the men's weight throw with a mark of 24.06m (78-11 1/4). Other unattached victories included Michael Buchanan (60m hurdles, 8.10), Ramy Ayoub (600m, 1:19.20), Eli Hoeft (800m, 1:53.30), Emmet Gerres (Mile, 4:17.45) and Tony Nelson (Shot Put, 16.66m | 54-8).
Minnesota's next time on the track will be a split weekend with student-athletes competing at both the Gopher Classic in Minneapolis as well as at the Meyo Invitational in South Bend, Ind. Both meets will start on Feb. 3.
