Jaworski Breaks Dorniden's 800m School Record at Meyo Invite

2/3/2024 3:49:00 PM | Men's Track & Field, Women's Track & Field

The Gophers posted three top-12 national marks on Saturday.

MINNEAPOLIS – For the first time in 18 years, the Minnesota Golden Gophers have a new school record holder in the women's 800m. Brooke Jaworski broke Heather Dorniden's 2006 record in the event at the Meyo Invitational in South Bend, Ind., while two other Gophers posted top-12 national performances on Saturday both at Notre Dame and at the Gopher Classic in Minneapolis.

For Jaworski, the 800m school record of 2:03.48 comes in just her third meet as a member of the Golden Gophers. She was the meet's runner-up behind Mallory Lindaman, an unattached professional that also posted a lifetime best to win the event. Jaworski's time places her ninth in the country in the 800m so far this season, and is second among Big Ten student-athletes only behind Hayley Kitching of Penn State who's 2:01.77 is the 17th-fastest in indoor college history.

Alongside Jaworski, Shelby Frank and Maja Maunsbach had standout performances on Saturday with Frank's coming back in the Twin Cities at the 2024 Gopher Classic. Frank's mark came on her final attempt of the competition with the senior's 24.09m (79-0 1/2) moving her to No. 2 on the national lists and was just two inches shy of her lifetime best she posted last year at the NCAA Indoor Championships to finish as the NCAA runner-up.

For Maunsbach, the Sweedish national posted a lifetime best of 8.18 to claim the 60m hurdles title at the Meyo Invitational. Maunsbach had matched her previous lifetime best of 8.26 in the preliminary heats and followed it up with the 8.18 time that puts her at 12th in the NCAA this year and third in the Big Ten Conference. Maunsbach's 8.18 also breaks her tie for third all-time at Minnesota in the event and is only behind the joint school record holders Kimberly Golding and Emma Spagnola, who both set the record in 2017.

Additionally the Maroon and Gold had six other program top 10 performances on Saturday. As far as national rankings go, Minnesota's 4x400m relay team of Jayla Campbell, Janielle Josephs, Brooke Jaworski and Abigail Schaaffe posted the 18th-fastest time in the nation this year at 3:37.82 to win the Meyo Invite.

Jaworski's weekend was special with the graduate posting a third program top 10 time, with the first being the 600m on Friday. Jaworski's 1:28.23 won the 600m at the Meyo Invite while teammate Erin Reidy put down the No. 8 time in program history at 1:31.24.

True freshman Victory Godah continued her strong start to her career with a winning 60m time of 7.35 at the Meyo Invite, which is the No. 5 time in school history in just her second meet with the program. Redshirt freshman Zoie Dundon also had a strong weekend with the Burnsville, Minn., native posting a 2:07.85 in the 800m, the 10th-fastest in program history. Minnesota now has three current student-athletes that sit inside the program's top 10 list in the 800m. Lastly sophomore Brooke Moore improved on her program top 10 triple jump mark to finish second at the Gopher Classic with a mark of 12.41m (40-8 3/4).

The 'U' also had a number of student-athletes compete unattached on Saturday at the Gopher Classic. Eight unattached Gophers won their events, highlighted by Devin Augustine in the 60m and freshman Charles Godfred in the long jump. Augustine won the 60m with a stellar 6.67 in the final while Charles Godfred won the long jump in his college debut with a leap of 7.58m (24-10 1/2), which would be the No. 7 mark outdoors in school history. Isaiah Schafer was stellar in the shot put, launching a pair of indoor personal bests to win the event with his sixth attempt of 19.16m (62-10 1/2) winning the event.

Other winners on Saturday at the Gopher Classic included Ahmed Khadar (400m, 49.69), Ellie Kuechle (600m, 1:36.82), Ramy Ayoub (800m, 1:54.17), Dan VanAcker (Mile, 4:18.80), Jak Urlacher (Pole Vault, 5.16m | 16-11) and Angelos Mantzouranis (Weight Throw, 20.90m | 68-7).

Minnesota will be split between the Windy City Classic in Chicago, Ill., and the St. Thomas Showcase. The Windy City Classic will run from Feb. 9-10 while the meet at St. Thomas will be contested all on Friday, Feb. 9.
