Minnesota Swim and Dive Defeats Army in Home Opener

MINNEAPOLIS – The Minnesota men's and women's swim and dive teams took care of business on Friday night, defeating Army at Jean K. Freeman Aquatic Center during their home openers. The No. 22 ranked men took down Army 197-103, while the No. 24 women's team won 238-62.Ā 

"It was so fun to have the swimming and diving community, our alumni, and supporters, show up in full force tonight!" said Minnesota head coach Kelly Kremer. "The energy really pushed us to some great early season performances! Looking forward to building off this is the weeks to come!"

Jacob Johnson etched his name into the school record book in the 200 fly with a time of 1:42.41. The previous record was set by Kaiser Neverman at 1:42.47 at the 2024 Big Ten Championships. Johnson also won the 100 fly with a time of 46.58.

It was a battle of close races throughout the night. The Minnesota men's 200 free relay came out on top by 14 tenths of a second with a time of 1:25.84. That team was made up of Davide Harabagiu, Neverman, Johnson, and Connor Groya.

On the women's side eight swimmers posted individual wins.Ā

Katie McCarthy and Morgan Thomas led the way with two individual wins each. McCarthy's came in the 1000 and 500 free events (4:44.69), and Thomas in the 50 free (22.49) and 100 fly (53.23).

Livi Wanner picked up the win in the 100 free (49.77) in her second meet as a Gopher. Mina Kaljevic, Paula Rodriguez Rivero, Claire Reinke, Elise Jacobs, Grace Drabot and Indy Jongman also picked up individual wins for the Maroon and Gold.

The women's 200 free relay made up of Faith Johnson, Ava Goodno, Claire Reinke, and Hannah Cornish picked up the victory with a time of 1:39.70. The 400 free relay of Hannah Cornish, Livi Wanner, Morgan Thomas, and Mina Kaljevic won with a time of 3:19.45.

The men also had six swimmers earn individual wins.

Joe Rudd, Joey Tepper and Neverman led the way with two individual wins. Rudd's came in both the 100 and 200 breast as he posted a time of 53.08 in the 100 and 1:56.26 in the 200. Tepper controlled the distance races, winning both the 1000 free and 500 free (4:21.81). Neverman won both the 50 free (19.91) and 200 IM (1:46.85). Bar Soloveychik and Ryan Slonac also earned individual wins.Ā

In the diving well, the Maroon and Gold went one-two-three respectively, in the women's 3-meter. Elna Widerstrom picked up the victory with a 284.33, while Addie Albrecht came in second with a 266.70 and Kate LaMonica was third with a 263.93. Widerstrom, Albrecht, and LaMonica also went one-two-three respectively, in the 1-meter. Widerstrom won with a score of 305.40, followed by Albrecht with a 295.05 and LaMonica with a 289.43.

YuTong Wang and Drew Bennett went one-two respectively, in the 1-meter. Wang won with a score of 360.38 and Bennett posted a 329.78. In the men's 3-meter Wang also picked up the victory with a score of 412.43.

The Gophers are back in action at home on Oct. 18 versus South Dakota and St. Thomas. At this tri-dual meet, the Gophers 16 seniors will be recognized ahead of the competition.
