Gophers Open Season With Victories Over Nebraska, South Dakota

LINCOLN, Neb. – The 2024-2025 Minnesota swim and dive season began victoriously with wins over Nebraska and South Dakota. The women's team outscored conference foe Nebraska 196-104 and the Coyotes 251-49, while the men took down USD 241-59.
 
"It was good to start the year in the win column for both teams," said Minnesota head coach Kelly Kremer. "We were encouraged by how well we performed, and more importantly, how engaged our student athletes are in the process of improving aspects that need attention. Lots of work ahead for us, but this was a great start to the season."
 
Claire Reinke led the way for the women bringing home three individual wins. For the men, graduate senior Kaiser Neverman paced the team with two individual wins as well as a team 200-yard relay victory.
 
The women also saw victories from Mina Kaljevic in the 200 free (1:50.71), and Faith Johnson in the 100 back (55.92). Both the women's 200 medley relay and 400 free relay picked up victories. The 200 medley of Faith Johnson, Ava Goodno, Mina Kaljevic, and Livi Wanner posted a time of 1:42.65. The 400 free relay of Morgan Thomas, Mina Kaljevic, Livi Wanner and Kamdyn Periat posted a time of 3:24.46. 
 
The Gopher newcomers had a strong showing with five individuals capturing their first Gopher victories. In the distance, Luke Brennan picked up a victory in his Gopher debut in the 1000 free (9:31.29). Jacob Johnson also picked up individual wins in his Gopher debut in the 200 fly (1:45.51) and 100 free (45.50). Livi Wanner picked up individual wins in the 50 free (23.11), 100 free (50.79) and as a member of the 200-yard relay team. Joe Polyak brought home the win in the 200-yard breaststroke. Kamdyn Periat picked up her first victory with the 400 free relay win.
 
The men also saw victories from Luke Leonidas in the 200 back (1:50.10), Ian Steffen in the 100 back (49.07) and 100 fly (49.37), Tyler Hansen in the 200 free (1.39.64) and Ryan Slonac in the 200 IM (1:50.39). The men's 400 free relay was also victorious with a time of 3:02.46. This team consisted of Ian Steffen, Jacob Johnson, Connor Groya, and Omar Abdelwahab.
 
In the diving well, YuTong Wang and Drew Bennett went one-two, respectively, in the 3-meter. Wang won with a score of 387.30 and Bennett posted a 350.30. On the women's side, Elna Widerstrom brought home the victory on the 3-meter (330.35). 
 
On the 1-meter the women went one-two-three respectively. Vivi Del Angel won with a score of 295.15, Widerstrom posted a 291.10, and Addie Albrecht with a 286.64. The men also went one-two-three respectively on the 1-meter. Wang won with a score of 349.70, Bennett posted a 307.85 and Braylon Goodno a 252.95.
 
The Gophers are back in action at home on October 11 versus Army. Fans are encouraged to get to Jean K. Freeman Aquatic Center early as the meet is part of Kyle Sockwell's dual meet tour.
