The Gophers are celebrating 50 years of women's gymnastics

MINNEAPOLIS -- The No. 16 University of Minnesota women's gymnastics team (7-0, 3-0 B1G) is preparing for its final Big Ten home meet of the 2024 season. The Gophers host No. 11 Michigan (3-4, 2-1 B1G) on Saturday, Feb. 10 at 4 p.m. Fans are encouraged to arrive early for introductions at 3:45 p.m. B1G+ will provide streaming coverage while fans can follow along with stats at Gophersports.com. Minnesota is searching for its first win over Michigan since the 2021 Big Ten Championships. The Gophers haven't defeated the Wolverines in the regular season since 2016.

PARKING ADVISORY
  • Numerous events are occurring on Saturday, Feb. 10 on the University of Minnesota campus, including Men's & Women's Swimming, Tennis, Women's Hockey, Men's Hockey, and Gymnastics.
  • All fans are encouraged to arrive early and allocate additional time for arriving on campus. Individuals attending Saturday's gymnastics meet are encouraged to park in the Washington Avenue ramp. Parking is $10 at this location. Please note that this facility only accepts credit cards upon entry and spaces cannot be guaranteed.
50 YEARS OF MINNESOTA WOMEN'S GYMNASTICS
  • Minnesota gymnastics is celebrating 50 years in existence in 2024, and Saturday will be Alumni Day at Maturi Pavilion. Dozens of Gophers from decades past will be coming to partake in the festivities.
  • Events on the weekend include: a Pre-Meet Celebration in the Williams Club Room, Alumni Acknowledgement immediately following the meet and a Post-Meet Celebration back in the Williams Arena Club Room.
SCOUTING MINNESOTA
  • The No. 16 Minnesota women's gymnastics team is set to host the No. 11 Michigan Wolverines (3-4, 2-1 B1G) on Alumni Day at Maturi Pavilion. The meet is set for Saturday, Feb. 10 at 4 p.m. CT. B1G+ will stream.
  • The Gophers roster 19 student-athletes in the 2024 season, led by five-time WCGA All-American and 2023 Big Ten Champion Mya Hooten and First Team All-Big Ten selection Gianna Gerdes
  • The Gophers added eight newcomers to the fray this season, including seven freshmen and a transfer from Pittsburgh University. Notable departures from 2023 include two-time All-American and three-time Second Team All-Big Ten selection Maddie Quarles. Two-time All-Big Ten honoree Halle Remlinger also departed after earning second team honors last season as a senior.
  • 13 of Minnesota's 19 rostered players have competed in at least one top six of an event so far this season.
  • A senior from Woodbury, Minn., Hooten was a 2021/2022 NCAA All-American in floor (first team, 9.500) and vault (second team, 9.9000) and 2023 WCGA Regular Season All-American in floor (first team) and vault (second team). She earned her first NCAA All-America honors in 2021 in floor (first team, 9.950) and vault (second team, 9.8750). Hooten posted a perfect 10, the seventh of her career, on the floor on Jan. 13 vs. EMU.
  • Minnesota earned its road-opening season-best score in program history when it tallied a 196.850 on Jan. 6 at the Mean Girls Super 16 in Las Vegas, Nev. Its best performance of the season came on Feb. 3 at Penn State, with a dazzling score of 197.525.
SCOUTING MICHIGAN
  • No. 11 Michigan (3-4, 2-1 B1G) is led by 34th-year head coach Bev Plocki. She's led them to 26 B1G titles, which is the most by any coach, in any sport, in B1G history. The 11-time B1G Coach of the Year led the team to the 2021 national title, the program's first.
  • The Wolverines entered the 2024 season as the No. 6 ranked team in the WCGA Preseason Poll and was picked to win the Big Ten Championship after capturing its 27th title in 2023. Graduate seniors Sierra Brooks and Gabby Wilson made  their returns for a fifth year. Brooks is the 2023 AAI Award winner and a seven-time WCGA First Team All-America honoree, while Wilson is a four-time WCGA All-American.
  • Michigan fell to No. 13 Michigan State 198.050-197.625 on Sunday afternoon despite tying a program-best 49.750 on floor behind a perfect 10 from Gabby Wilson.
  • Michigan holds Big Ten wins this year over Ohio State and Nebraska and a non-league win over Stanford. It finished fourth in their session at the Las Vegas Super 16 behind No. 1 Oklahoma, No. 9 Kentucky and No. 11 MSU.
LAST SEASON
  • The 'U' is coming off a 2023 season that saw it post a 10-6-1 (4-4-1 Big Ten) meet record, finishing fifth in the regular season standings. The Gophers went on to finish third at the Big Ten Championships (197.250) and fifth at the NCAA Regionals (197.200). They will be looking to qualify for nationals for the third time in the last four seasons in 2024.
GOPHERS HISTORY VS. MICHIGAN
  • Against Michigan, Minnesota is 24-57 all-time, including NCAA Regionals, NCAA Championships and Big Ten Championships. The Gophers are 9-22 in regular season meets vs. Michigan. At home, they're 4-7 against UM.
  • Their last win at the Pav was in 2013 during a quad meet. Michigan was ranked No. 1 in the country at the time and it was Minnesota's first ever win over a No. 1 ranked team. 
  • The Gophers last bested Michigan in a meet at the 2021 Big Ten Championships at the Pav, ending Michigan's streak of six straight B1G titles.
  • The Gophers are 3-0 at home this season, 3-0 at neutral sites and 1-0 on the road. They are 20-1 at home in the last four years.
COACHING STAFF
  • Head coach Jenny Hansen is in her 10th season at the helm of the program. Associate head coach Rich Stenger and assistant coach Geralen Stack-Eaton also enter their 10th years with the team. Fellow assistant Kiki Parenteau was promoted to assistant coach this summer after serving as a volunteer assistant for the past two years. She will be entering year three in 2024.
  • During her time with the Golden Gophers, Hansen is 115-44-1 (62-27-1 B1G) in meets.
  • Also under her watch, Gophers took home the 2021 Big Ten title their first conference championships crown since 2006 and the program's sixth ever. They also won the 2016 Big Ten regular season title, the programs third (2013/2014). In 2022, Minnesota set a program-record by finishing sixth (197.1125) at the NCAA Championships.
WEEK FIVE STANDOUTS; LAST TIME OUT
  • Minnesota moved to 7-0 (3-0 B1G) with a 197.525-197.025 win over Penn State on Saturday. The Gophers scored scored a season-high 49.575 on beam, which was the fifth-best score in the event in program history. Katie Horak and Ella Sirjord earned career-bests of 9.950 while Emily Koch and Sarah Moraw (9.900) each posted season-highs.
  • The 'U' went 49.475 on floor, paced by four 9.900-or-higher efforts, led by Gianna Gerdes (9.925) who had a career-day in the all-around with a score of 39.525. Marissa Jencks and Emily Koch (9.900) also had career-best days on the floor.
  • Gophers senior Mya Hooten earned her fourth vault event title of the year with a 9.900. Minnesota scored a 49.150 as a team.
  • Freshman Jordyn Lyden tied the program record for best uneven bar score by an individual with a dazzling 9.975 effort. As team, Minnesota went 49.325 on bars. Marissa Jencks and Ella Sirjord (9.900) earned career-best marks.
WCGA AND ROAD TO NATIONALS RANKINGS
  • Entering week six, the Golden Gophers stay at No. 16 in the Road to Nationals rankings. The 'U' ranks eighth in the nation in beam, 15th on floor and bars and 19th in vault.
  • Individually, Minnesota's Gianna Gerdes ranks 22nd in the nation in all-around. Mya Hooten ranks 15th in floor and 11th in vault while Brooklyn Rowray ranks No. 1 in the country on balance beam after posting a 9.975 on Jan. 6. She hasn't competed since then after suffering an achilles injury on Jan. 13. Ella Sirjord ranks 26th in the country on beam.
  • Minnesota began the 2024 season ranked No. 18 in the WCGA Preseason poll. The 'U' is coming off a 2023 season that saw it go 10-6-1 (4-4-1 Big Ten), finishing fifth in the conference standings. The 'U' finished third at the Big Ten Championships (197.250) and fifth at the NCAA Regionals (197.200). B1G WEEKLY AWARDS
  • Mya Hooten was named Big Ten Event Specialist of the Week on Jan. 16 after her perfect 10 on floor against Eastern Michigan on Jan. 13. She earned her second event specialist of the week award on Jan. 30 after two standout performances on vault and floor against Iowa and Maryland.
  • Jordyn Lyden was named Big Ten Freshman of the Week on Jan. 9, 2024 and Feb. 6, 2024. This past week, she earned rookie of the week honors after tying a program record with a 9.975 outing on the uneven bars at Penn State.
