Shelby Frank broke her own school record to win the discus.
MINNEAPOLIS – The University of Minnesota track and field program saw 11 different program top 10 performances down in Waco, Texas, at the Clyde Hart Classic on Friday and Saturday. Senior Shelby Frank set two of those marks, with her discus victory improving on her school record in the event that she set in 2022.
Frank's school record toss was marked at 59.69m (195-10) and improved on her previous school record mark of 58.85m (193-1) that she set at the 2022 Big Ten Outdoor Championships. Frank's toss in the discus is an early outdoor season No. 1 mark in the nation. Frank also put forth a lifetime best in the hammer as well, launching the implement 62.78m (205-11) to finish as the top college athlete and pushes her to the No. 6 spot in Minnesota history.
Minnesota's Charles Godfred, a true freshman from Nigeria, put forth the best long jump mark in 29 years to win the event at 7.96m (26-1 1/2). The lifetime best for the first-year Gopher is the best by a freshman in school history and puts him just behind the school record holder, Keita Cline, who's 8.12m (26-7 3/4) jump came in 1995.
The field events were the highlight of the weekend with freshman Angelos Mantzouranis posting an incredible 73.85m (242-3) toss in the men's hammer throw to win the event. The 19-year-old freshman from Athens, Greece, set the Clyde Hart Track and Field Stadium record in the event and is the early holder of the No. 1 spot in the nation in the event. Mantzouranis moved up from No. 4 to No. 3 with the performance, passing up 2023 NCAA All-American Jake Kubiatowicz. Minnesota now has four different individuals with marks beyond 72.40m (237-6) in the last eight years (Mantzouranis, Kubiatowicz, Kostas Zaltos, Sean Donnelly).
The international crew for the Maroon and Gold shined throughout the weekend with Victory Godah putting down the No. 4 time in school history in the 200m on Friday and the No. 7 time in school history in the 100m on Saturday. Godah's performance makes her just the second Gopher since 2003 to put down a wind-legal 200m time of 23.73 or faster (Amira Young, 2023, 22.84). In the 100m, Godah's 11.55 was good enough for the No. 2 finish among college competitors.
Back off the track, Minnesota's jumpers continued to excel on Saturday with Diarra Sow and Brooke Moore posting top 10 performances in the triple jump while Alliyah McNeil posted her best outdoor high jump clearance in a Minnesota uniform. Sow's winning jump of 13.10m (42-11 3/4) is the second-best mark of her career (indoors and outdoors) and puts her at No. 4 in school history. For Moore, her breakthrough leap of 12.85m (42-2) was good enough for second overall in Waco, and places her at No. 7 in school history in the triple jump. McNeil's high jump effort of 1.79m (5-10 1/2) put her at No. 6 in school history outdoors, and claimed her the title at the Clyde Hart Classic.
Other notable finishes for the Gophers at the Clyde Hart Classic included Abigail Schaaffe's 54.28 in the 400m, which is No. 10 in program history outdoors. Devin Augustine won the men's 200m, cruising to an early-season wind-legal time of 20.94 (+1.6 m/s). Jak Urlacher's first clearance of the season came at a height of 5.20m (17-0 3/4), which was good enough for the runner-up finish in Waco.
Minnesota's next outdoor test will be at the Raleigh Relays from March 28-30 in Raleigh, N.C.
