4/25/2024 3:01:00 PM | Men's Golf

MINNEAPOLIS - The University of Minnesota men's golf team is set to tee off at the Big Ten Championships on Friday at Scioto Country Club in Columbus, Ohio.

Competition will begin at 8 a.m. CT both Friday and Saturday, with the final round beginning at 7 a.m. CT on Sunday.

The Gophers finished last year's conference championship tied with Purdue for seventh with a score of 596 (+28) after the final round was canceled due to rain. The University of Illinois is the eight-time reigning conference champion, with the Gophers being the last team other than the Illini to win the title back in 2014.

In its history, Minnesota has won the team title eight times and had 10 individual champions. Most recently, Angus Flanagan tied for first place in 2019.

The Field:
All 14 teams in the conference will compete in the tournament, with No. 18 Illinois being the highest ranked among the field.

The Lineup:
The Gophers will be sending six golfers to compete for a Big Ten title: graduate seniors Jacob Pedersen and Brock Winter, Warian, junior Bennett Swavely, and sophomores Cormac Sharpe and Jack Wetzel

The Course:
Designed by legendary course architect Donald Ross, Scioto Country Club has been home to many historic tournaments. The golf course, recently renovated in 2021 by Andrew Green, used the 1926 "Dodo Bird" drawing to restore the original Donald Ross course that hosted the 1926 National Open and the 1931 Ryder Cup. Fairway widths were widened to original size, Ross designed features such as hummocks and flat bottom bunkers were again restored to showcase the original design while built for the modern player.

Last Time Out:
The Maroon and Gold are one week removed from winning the High Meadows Intercollegiate, it's their first win since the MacDonald Cup back in 2022. The team's score of 833 (-19) is now fourth all time in program history. Senior Ben Warian (65-63-70) had a historic week, setting the program's all- time 36 hole record (128), 54- hole record (198), and tying him for second all time in 18- hole score (63). Warian, who was named Big Ten Golfer of the Week, nabbed 19 birdies to capture a 15-under score to par, a five stroke win over the field.

Warian's win was the first for Minnesota since Angus Flanagan did so at the Git R Done Husker Invitational in April 2021.
