Novice Eight Leads Gophers at Ohio State

Opening-race win for the 'U'

MINNEAPOLIS - Minnesota rowing picked up a race victory from its First Novice Eight boat Saturday in a duel against No. 12 Ohio State. The Golden Gophers won their first action of the day before the Buckeyes claimed the final four matchups at Griggs Reservoir.

In what was originally scheduled as a four-team regatta, the event was altered due to high water and current conditions that did now allow for four boats to race safely at the same time. After changing course, the Maroon and Gold battled the nationally-ranked Buckeyes in a duel.

The first novice eight boat got the day off to a fast start and it never wavered for the entire race, defeating OSU by nearly four seconds. Minnesota stayed with the hosts during the next four races, but could not pick up another win on the fast-moving water.

Coach Strodel's Comments
"It was incredibly exciting to see the Gophers cross the finish line ahead of a traditionally deep Ohio State crew," Minnesota head coach Alicea Strodel said. "It just takes one victory to inspire and show what is possible! And for this example, to come from the youngest athletes on our team is really cool."
