From Head Coach Alicea Strodel's Desk
"We will travel with our full squad this weekend," Strodel said. "Having all events and boat classes compete brings big energy and excitement! We've seen progress at training this week and look forward to having two good racing opportunities."
Â
Last Time on the Water
The Gophers picked up a race victory from their First Novice Eight boat April 6 in a duel against No. 12 Ohio State. Minnesota won its first action of the day before the Buckeyes claimed the final four matchups at Griggs Reservoir in what was originally scheduled as a four-team regatta. The event was altered due to high water and current conditions that did now allow for four boats to race safely at the same time. The novice crew got off to a fast start and it never wavered for the entire race, defeating OSU by nearly four seconds.
Â
Back in the National Spotlight
For the second time in four weeks this spring, the Minnesota rowing team received votes in the Pocock/CRCA Coaches Poll. The Gophers have fought through a challenging slate to begin the season with duels against West Coast Conference preseason favorite Gonzaga, No. 16 Tennessee, and No. 12 Ohio State.
Â
Earned a Weekly Honor
The Maroon and Gold's First Varsity Boat was recognized as the Big Ten Conference Boat of the Week March 19 after taking down Gonzaga by more than three seconds. It was the fastest time of the day, 6:36.46, from the Chula Vista Elite Athlete Training Center and sealed the dual win over the Bulldogs. It was the first weekly award for the Golden Gophers since April 27, 2021, when the First Varsity Eight earned the same weekly award.
Â
Gophers Announce 2023-24 Captains
Minnesota turned to a second-year captain and two new leaders for its trio of captains during the 2023-24 campaign. Isabella Bejaran (Egg Harbor Township, N.J.) returns after serving as a team captain a season ago, while Madeline Lange (St. Paul, Minn.) and Tallulah Sweet (St. Paul, Minn.) join the leadership group for the Maroon and Gold.
