The Gophers will face Milwaukee and Marquette
MINNEAPOLIS - Minnesota soccer continues its three-game road stand with a pair of matches against Milwaukee and Marquette. The Gophers kick off against the Panthers on Thursday at 7 p.m. and against Marquette on Sunday at 1 p.m. CT.

Scouting Milwaukee
With an 0-3 start to the 2024 season for the Panthers, Thursday's match against the Gophers is their home opener at Engelmann Stadium. Milwaukee dropped three-straight to Xavier, No. 18 Ohio State, and Valparaiso. Milwaukee's goal scorers include Emily Petring, Elizabeth Reece, and Laney Higgins.
Kevin Boyd enters his third season leading the Panthers and has kept their dominance in the Horizon League. Boyd and his staff have won the last two Horizon League regular-season and Tournament Championships while making back-to-back appearances in the NCAA Tournament.
Scouting Marquette
Before facing Minnesota, Marquette will first host Illinois Chicago on Thursday at Valley Fields. The 2024 season for the Golden Eagles marks Chris Allen's head-coaching debut after an eight-year stint on staff at Saint Louis.
So far this season, Marquette has an overall record of 0-3-1 with losses coming from Colorado, Northwestern, and Western Michigan. The lone tie was their home opener against Kansas City.
The Last Time the Gophers were in Milwaukee
Last season, Minnesota split a pair of matches between Milwaukee and Marquette. The Gophers fell short to the Panthers, 1-0. Three days later, they defeated Marquette, 2-0.
Izzy Brown scored the game-winning goal over the Golden Eagles while Paige Kalal added the second off a set piece, her first career goal.
Harper Hat-Trick
Khyah Harper had a day on Sunday against St. Thomas. The senior forward scored a hat-trick in the 4-1 win over the Tommies. In addition, Harper assisted Sophia Romine's goal, totaling seven points. Her achievement marks the most points in a game by a Gopher since Sydney Squires, who scored four goals back in 2017 against Iowa State.
Harper's achievement earned her recognition from the conference. The senior was named Big Ten Co-Offensive Player of the Week.
Do You Get Deja Vu?
Following Minnesota's win over St. Thomas, only three official meetings have occurred in the history of both programs. The crosstown foes met for the first time back in 1993, once again last fall, and for the third time last weekend.
In each game, a hat-trick has been scored. During the 1993 season, Erin Chastain (Hussey) scored her first career hat-trick. 30 years later, Sophia Boman did the same and in 2024 Harper repeated history.
The Gophers now lead the overall series 3-0 and have outscored the Tommies 19-1.
The Streak Continues
In her fourth season at the helm of the Gopher soccer program, Erin Chastain continued Minnesota's unbeaten season opener streak. While leading her alma mater, Chastain and her staff have not lost a season opener. Chastain has extended the streak to 12-straight season opening results, which dates back to 2013. In 32 seasons the Gophers lost only eight season openers (19-8-5), four being to top five opponents and one holding a top 20 ranking.
Hitting the Road
Minnesota's game against St. Thomas marked the first of a three-game roadtrip before returning home on Sept. 5. This week, the Maroon and Gold will trek to Wisconsin for contests against the reigning Horizon League champion, Milwaukee, and their second BIG EAST opponent this season, Marquette.
In Our Debut Era
Four Gophers made their first debuts against Creighton. Along with Caroline Birdsell, graduate transfer Evelyn Calhoon came out big as well, assisting both of Birdsell's goals. Freshman Ashley Thurk took charge at right back, competing for a full 90 minutes in her first start and dishing out one shot. Alongside her in the back, goalkeeper Sarah Martin picked up her first start, save, and win between the pipes.
Opportunity Awaits
Minnesota's schedule has been recognized as one of the most difficult. With the addition of USC, UCLA and the conference realignment, 10 of the Gophers' 20 opponents made the 2023 NCAA Tournament. Seven Big Ten schools received rankings in the United Soccer Coaches Preseason Poll. Five are on Minnesota's 2024 slate, with only one of the contests (Iowa) being played at Elizabeth Lyle Robbie Stadium.
