No. 24 ‘U’ Returns to Action in Iowa City on Halloween

MINNEAPOLIS, MINN. - The University of Minnesota women's swimming and diving program hits the water in Iowa City this weekend to take on the University of Iowa Hawkeyes. Action is set to kick off at 1:30 PM in the Campus Recreation and Wellness Center.

Last Time Out
Minnesota closed out a 2-1 weekend at The Dual Meet Tournament, finishing fifth overall at the McAuley Aquatic Center in Atlanta.
The Gophers opened their tournament schedule with nine event wins over 22 events against No. 20 ranked Auburn, falling in a close 358-351 tilt.
Ryan Slonac collected the Gopher's first win of the day in the 200 back with a time of 1:43.89, followed up by Jacob Johnson's 46.30 performance in the 100 fly two events later.
Minnesota would sweep the 500 free, with McCarthy collecting her first win of the day in the event with a time of 4:46.40 and Daniel Eichel collecting the win on the men's side with a time of 4:22.39.
The Gophers would also go on to sweep the 200 IM, with McCarthy collecting her second win of the day with a time of 1:58.91 and Alberto Hernandez collecting the win for the men with a time of 1:47.68 and his first individual win of the season.
Over in the diving well, Widerstrom topped the score sheet in both the 1-meter and 3-meter events with scores of 150.30 and 183.90 respectively. Drew Bennett helped Minnesota take the win in the men's 3-meter, achieving a score of 181.50 for the first place finish.
The Gophers bounced back with a dominant win over the George Washington University Revolutionaries, tallying a 581-208 victory in the second round.
Five swimmers for Minnesota collected their first individual wins of the season. Kamdyn Periat collected her win in the 100 back with a time of 54.63, followed up by Davide Harabagiu in the men's 100 back with a time of 48.05 and Grace Drabot in the 200 breast with a time 2:15.78. Minnesota swept the 50 free with Livi Wanner collecting the win in the women's race with a time of 22.34, and Omar Abdelwahab collecting the win in the men's race with a time of 20.56. Kayla Barr collected her first career collegiate individual win in the 200 IM, tallying a time of 2:02.67.
The Gophers closed out their weekend with a 445-345 victory over the host team, Georgia Tech, tallying 13 first place finishes over their final 22 events.
Ava Yablonski got things going for Minnesota, picking up the team's first win of the morning in the 100 back with a time of 53.18. Harabagiu kept things rolling, picking up the win in the men's 100 back with a time of 47.84.
The Gophers swept the next two events, taking the win in both 200 fly races. McCarthy picked up her first win of the day on the women's side, tallying a time of 1:59.06. Johnson prevailed on the men's side, tallying a time of 1:42.99.
Keira Mullins picked up the next win for Minnesota, tallying a time of 2:15.17 to top the heat sheet in the 200 breaststroke.
Five events later, the Gophers would sweep the 500 free races. McCarthy picked up her second win of the day with a time of 4:50.20, while Eichel picked up the win on the men's side with a time of 4:22.66.
Wanner picked up her win in the 50 free with a time of 22.36 before Minnesota would sweep the 200 IM. McCarthy picked up her final individual win of the weekend with a time of 1:49.90, while Hernandez touched the wall first in the men's race with a time of 1:47.56.
Over in the diving well, Widerstrom continued her dominance with another pair of wins. Widerstrom topped the charts in both the 1-meter and 3-meter events this morning, tallying scores of 157.05 and 162.00 respectively, collecting the first place finish in all six events she competed in throughout the tournament.
Minnesota picked up one more win to close out the weekend, with Periat, Ava Goodno, Yablonski, and Wanner picking up the victory in the 200 medley relay with a time of 1:39.11.
Big Ten Weekly Awards
Three Gophers earned Big Ten honors for the week of Oct. 22 following their performance at The Dual Meet Tournament. Katie McCarthy was named Swimmer of the Week, Kayla Barr was named Freshman of the Week, and Drew Bennett was named Diver of the Week.
CSCAA Rankings
Both men's and women's programs ranked at No. 24 in the first College Swimming and Diving Coaches Association of America (CSCAA) poll this season, released on Oct. 2.

Freeman Aquatic Center next weekend, celebrating their annual "Pack the Pool" event and Senior Day recognitions with a border battle against the University of Wisconsin-Madison. Action against the Badgers is set to kick off on Friday, Nov. 7, at 5:00 PM.
