Second-Half Surge Lifts Mizzou Past Gophers
11/12/2025 9:39:00 PM | Men's Basketball
Cade Tyson scored 17 points and Isaac Asuma added a season-high 13, but a 25-2 second-half Missouri run broke open what had been a close game, as the Tigers handed Minnesota its first loss of the season, 83-60.
Minnesota (2-1) led 46-45 following a dunk by Tyson with 13:33 remaining, but the Gophers wouldn't make another field goal for more than eight minutes, and the Tigers went on their game-changing run. Tyson, who scored 11 of his team-high 17 points in the second half, finished 6-of-12 from the field and 5-of-7 at the free throw line. Asuma made three three-pointers to finish in double-figues for the first time this season, and Chansey Willis Jr. finished with nine points, four rebounds, and a team-high three assists. Jaylen Crocker-Johnson had six points and a game-high 12 rebounds, and Langston Reynolds added seven points and three boards.
Minnesota jumped ahead 6-2 on a pair of three-pointers from Asuma, and led 10-5 at the first media timeout. A Mizzou three-pointer trimmed the lead to 10-8, but Tyson hit an 18-foot jumper, Crocker-Johnson made a left-hander floater in the lane, and Bobby Durkin knocked down a three for a 17-8 lead at the 11:30 mark. The Tigers pulled within 17-12, but a Reynolds put-back and a pair of Tyson free throws extended the lead back to nine with 8:04 left in the half. But a 13-3 Mizzou run wiped away Minnesota's lead and put the Tigers up, 25-24, with 5:00 remaining, forcing Niko Medved to call timeout. The one-point deficit marked the first time the Gophers had trailed this season. Asuma made a short jumper in the lane to reclaim the lead, and a Crocker-Johnson layup made it 28-25, but a 7-2 Tigers run to close the half gave Mizzou a 32-30 lead at the break.
Asuma's two early three-pointers helped him lead the Gophers with eight first-half points, while Reynolds had seven points, Tyson had six, and Crocker-Johnson added four points and a team-high eight rebounds. As a team, Minnesota made 12-of-33 (.364) field goals, including 3-of-15 from beyond the arc, and 3-of-5 free throws, The Gophers held a 24-11 rebounding advantage, including 11-0 on offensive boards. Missouri shot 47.8 percent (11-of-23) from the field, including 5-of-12 treys, and 5-of-7 at the line. The Tigers were led by Sebastian Mack's 10 points, and Mark Mitchell added seven points and five rebounds.
The Gophers began the second half with a 10-3 run, including another opening three-pointer by Asuma and five points from Willis Jr. The Tigers responded with a 7-0 run to retake a 42-40 lead, before Tyson scored six-straight points for a 46-45 Gophers lead with 13:33 left. But that's when Mizzou broke the game open with its 25-2 run, putting the Tigers in front, 70-48, with 5:43 remaining. A Crocker-Johnson layup with 5:22 left ended Minnesota's field goal drought.
Minnesota returns home for an 8:00 p.m. tipoff versus Green Bay on Saturday, Nov. 15. The game will be televised on Big Ten Network.
